ST. GEORGE  Laura Blanche Churchfield Graves passed away on December 5, 2012, after 93 years of a wonderful life.

Mom was born October 2, 1919 in Wells, Nevada to John Roy Churchfield and Laura Ruth (Duval) Churchfield, along with three brothers and three sisters.

The family moved to Buhl, Idaho, where Blanche graduated from Buhl High in 1937, then went to work at the Ramona Theater for the next five years.

Mom met the love of her life, Edwin Russell Graves, and they were married on August 16, 1941. They were blessed with 70 years of fun and joy. Mom and Dad moved to Los Angeles, CA. shortly thereafter where Blanched worked for Douglas Aircraft for nine years. During this time they discovered Lawrence Welk’s band was playing nearby and that was the start of some of their best memories, dancing many a weekend away, and continuing to love his music right to the end of both their lives. An even better event in L.A. was the birth of their one and only child, Terrance Russell Graves.

In 1956 they moved to Reno, Nevada, where Mom worked for Title Insurance and Trust Co. as Personnel Director for 19 years. After retiring in 1976, they moved back to Buhl, ID for eight years and then to St. George, UT. Not only did they love to dance but golf was a major part of their lives and she belonged to the St. George Ladies Golf Assn. Blanche (“Spec”) also assisted Ed (”Spiver”) with his duties at the St. George Elk’s Lodge 1743, where they loved to dance, party and listen to country music with their friends. While in Reno, Mom was a past President and Secretary of the Postmaster’s Auxiliary.

Blanche was a hard worker and actually enjoyed house and yard work, which showed in the way she set her priorities; a week before leaving this earth she was trying to rake leaves and iron, but she was happy having “things to do”. She and Dad shared so many great memories that she was lost when he died a year ago but having “accepted the Lord” together we are comforted knowing they are together again in Heaven. And though we still miss them greatly, we’re happy they’re reunited in such a wonderful dream.

Blanche is survived by her son, Terry and his wife Kathleen of Pocatello, ID; sister, Edna Terbush and her son, Ron; sister-in-law, Jane Churchfield of St. George; two brothers, Sim Churchfield of Boise, ID and Marvin (Julie) Churchfield of Elko, NV; two great-grandchildren, Austin Graves of Boise, ID and Shantelle Graves of Alliance, NB.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Graves; mother and father, Laura and John Churchfield; grandsons, Gary Russell Graves and Shane Graves; sisters, Elsie Hudson, Buelah “Jack” Thompson, and brother, Freeman “Huck” Churchfield.

We want to extend our deep “Thanks” to Kara, Star, Michael and others of Creekside/Encompass Hospice of Pocatello, ID; Gina, Becca, Rick and Carol of Applegate Hospice in St. George, UT and The Gables (Angie, Amy, Andrea, Brooke and others) of Pocatello for all the wonderful love and care provided to Mom. We are also grateful to Jamie (Colleen) Mayer, Florence, Peggy and Margaret of University Bible Church for ministering to Mom and Dad and providing the means by which they were “saved”. <br>

A “Celebration of Life” will be planned for the Spring and family and friends will be notified at a later date. Spilsbury Mortuary of St. George, UT (435) 673-2454 is providing the end-of-life detail, help and cremation. Family and friends are invited to leave their condolences in her guest book at www.spilsburymortuary.com.

ST. GEORGE  Alta Deneice Truman Snow, age 76, passed away Thursday, November 22, 2012, in St. George, Utah.
She was born in Enterprise, Utah on March 23, 1936, to Alma Truman and Alta Holt Truman. She was
married to Dexter C. Snow on August 12, 1954 in the St. George, Utah temple by Pres. Harold S. Snow.

She was raised in Enterprise, Utah until the 8th grade when the family moved to St. George where she
attended the local schools and graduated from Dixie High School in 1954. She married Dexter C. Snow
that summer they were called in the U.S.A. Air Force and sent to Hill Air Force Base, Utah for a two year
tour of duty where he was a Lieutenant working in the procurement division. Her son Devery Clinton
Snow was born on June 21, 1955 at Salt Lake City, Utah and became the highlight of her life.

They moved to Salt Lake City and she auditioned for the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir and was accepted.
She was, at that time, the youngest member of the Choir. The director Richard Condie liked her and
made her feel very special and loved by him and the entire choir. She was the first choir member from
St. George and the cameramen loved to have her on camera and that gave the family here a great
opportunity to see her in the broadcast each Sunday morning. This also gave her the opportunity to
meet and be personally involved with the Prophets including; David O McKay, Joseph Fielding Smith,
Harold B. Lee, Spencer W. Kimball, Ezra Taft Benson, Howard W. Hunter and Gordon B. Hinckley. For
many years she was seated directly in front of Jesse Evans Smith and enjoyed her great talent and sense
of humor.

During the many years she was a member of the choir she sang under the direction of several directors
including; Richard Condie, Jay Welsh, Gerald Ottley and special programs both in Salt Lake City and New
York under the direction of Eugene Ormandy. The choir also gave her the opportunity to sing in most of
the great concert halls of the world like Carnegie Hall in New York and George Albert Hall in London and
the Lincoln Center. She also sang with the Choir on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York City.

In 1960 they moved to St. George and she had her daughter Diane on October 18, 1960. She was helping
work with Dex at the family grocery store and this sort of interrupted the Deer Season work at the store,
but Diane was well worth it. She has been the pride and joy of Deneice’s life.

When they moved back to Salt Lake City in 1970 she again joined the Choir and was able to travel
extensively with the Choir. In the early period they traveled across the US by train giving concerts in
most of the major cities of the country including St. Louis, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York City,
Toronto , Chicago, etc.

Later they traveled to Mexico City to the first area conference. Then they went to the Washington DC
temple dedication, to Calgary Canada and on the grand tour of Europe. They had a special group of
Altos that became lifelong friends and created a bond that has endured through the years. The choir
membership was a highlight experience in her life for which she has always been very grateful.

Deniece was the helpmeet and companion to Dexter as he moved the family from Salt Lake City to
St. George then back to Salt Lake City. On to California for a brief period then home to St. George for
another few years then off to Las Vegas for several years then back to St. George where they have been
residing. In each of the places they lived she created great friendships that continued to keep them in
contact with those people and the area throughout her life.

During these years she was active in several business ventures and held her own real estate license and
worked with Dexter in the businesses.

Deneice was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many
positions in the Church over the years. She was in the Primary, MIA and Relief Society organizations and
was both Stake and Ward Relief Society Presidents and was the chorister for most of these organizations
for over 50 years. She also worked in the temple and has served diligently in each of the callings she has
been given.

She is survived by her son, Devery C. (Kelley S.) Snow and daughter, Diane S. Hoefelmann; 12
grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, A Delmont (Karol) Truman, Lonnie H. (Leslie)
Truman; sisters, Ada Jane (Leland) Kleinman and Margaret Marshall; brother-in-law, Brent (D’on) Snow;
and sister-in-law, Sheron (Richard) Hafen. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dexter C.
Snow; and her sister, Carolyn T. Adams.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 11:00 am at the Foster Hills Ward Chapel,
912 S. 1740 E. (on Foremaster), St. George, UT. There will be a viewing Friday, December 7, from 7:00-

Jesse McFarlin was last seen alive at approximately 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 25, 2012 in La Verkin. Four days later, he was found deceased at the bottom of a steep cliff in Toquerville, his vehicle parked at the nearby cemetery. His body was retrieved by Washington County Sheriff Search and Rescue and an investigation into his death was launched by the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

According to autopsy results, Jesse McFarlin suffered multiple blunt force injuries due to his fall, including a fatal blow to the head. His death was ruled accidental and the investigation has now officially been closed.

“There was no evidence at the scene or anything found in the investigation that led us to believe that his death was anything other than an accident,” said Det. Nate Abbott, public information officer for the Washington County Sheriff’s Department. “There was no one … nothing suspicious involved.”

In early September, a memorial service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Springdale. A cross bearing Jesse McFarlin’s name now stands atop the cliff from which he fell.

ST. GEORGE – DeVona Johnson Bradley, 71, died December 31, 2012, from complications of blood clot induced cardiac arrest in St. George, UT. She was born August 29, 1941 in Logan, UT to Grant & LaRue Johnson. She is survived by her children – Randy Carter, Troy Carter, Michelle Carter Daniels, Shauntelle Carter McPhie, Donnielle Carter, her husband Paul R. Bradley, 18 grandchildren and countless family and friends.

DeVona spent most of her life improving the life of others. Having struggled with her health from an early age she began searching for alternatives when told at the age of 40 that she had 6 months to live. DeVona then became a champion for health and natural healing which saved her life and limitless others. It also led to hosting a health talk radio show for the past 27 years in various places including Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, San Diego, Salt Lake City and most recently DeVona’s Health & Wellness Show on the KZNU Fox News station here in St. George, UT.
Quick witted and quick to laugh her listeners often recognized her by her laugh alone.
An amazingly generous person, DeVona had a strong devotion and love of her family. Never a day went by that a member of her family didn’t hear her voice and her wisdom. She raised a generational family that is close, loving and loves being together. Something that is a rarity in this world, just like her. From the moment people met her, most recognized what a special gift she is.

A Celebration of Life will be held January 12th at the RidgePointe Homes Community Center from 2-5pm. 1360 E. Telegraph St. Washington, UT. One of DeVona’s greatest joys was taking care of her grandchildren and other children she loved on LDS missions. So we ask, in lieu of flowers or gifts please help DeVona’s family to continue her tradition of letting those who are away from their family know that they are loved. You can make a donation at any Mountain America Credit Union to the DeVona Johnson Memorial Fund or donations will be accepted at her Celebration of Life or online at www.DeVonasMemorialFund.com.

DeVona may have been small in stature but her impact on people and the world was vast and never-ending. Thank you for the gift that your generosity continues to be.

Barbara was an angel who was called home to re-join her parents and other loved ones on August 5th, 2013. Barbara was born to Dan and Alice Warkentin on September 8, 1950 in Provo, Utah.

Barbara graduated from Bonneville High School in 1969. She married and later divorced. During the marriage she had a son, Adam (Jamie) Dudynsky, now residing in California.

Barbara was an absolute joy to be around, even up to her last breath of life. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and crocheting. She especially loved to play cards with friends and family and was fortunate to do this even up to her last days. Barbara was hard-working and very Independent. She loved her job as Head Cashier at the West St. George Home Depot in St. George, Utah. She loved her fellow co-workers, they were here family there. It broke her heart when she became to ill to work.

Barbara was a strong-willed soul and showed she was a fighter throughout her lifetime. This proved to be true when she began her courageous battle with cancer in 2011. Her biggest concern before her death was not death itself, but rather that of being a burden. She was an amazing woman and she will be truly missed. Barbara, we love you for all ETERNITY!

She is survived by John (Diana) Warkentin; Bill (Louise) Warkentin; Shirley Evane and two grandchildren, Nathan Winward and Megan (Zena) Winward, as well as five other adopted grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.

Please join us for a Celebration of Life as we remember Barbara on August 11th at the home of her brother John, 2536 N. 3425 W. Plain City, UT from 1-4 pm. This will be a special time to reflect on memories of her. Bring pictures and thoughts. A memorial will be held in St. George at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donate to a charity of your choice.

A special thanks to John and Diana for opening their home and taking care of Barbara during her last days; also to Access Hospice for their support and help.

Ralph Young McClure

Ralph Young McClure

Ralph_McClure

On Saturday August 24, 2013, we lost a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and a true friend and our heavenly father welcomed a loved one home. Ralph Young McClure passed away peacefully in his home after a long battle with cancer. Ralph was born on December 1, 1930, to Mary and Marvin Young in Salt Lake City, Utah. He attended South High and briefly attended the University of Utah before being drafted by Red Socks organization to play baseball, however that too was cut short when he accepted a call to serve as a missionary for the LDS Church.

Ralph loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and was an active member of the LDS Church having held many callings. He especially enjoyed serving with his wife Eileen on an international mission to India between 2002 and 2004 and eventually served in the St. George Temple in ecclesiastical capacities. Ralph’s later life was filled with moments of service as he reached out to neighbors in need. He also served as Coordinator for the Sunday Sacrament Meetings at Ridgeview Gardens.

Ralph enjoyed traveling overseas in his early life. A notable were trips to the UK, France & Germany of which he often fondly reminisced and had hopes of someday re-visiting with his beautiful Eileen. A dream unfortunately that did not materialize. A more recent international visit was to India to which he and Eileen were called to serve as full time missionaries for 2 years in service for the LDS Church. In regards to the unfamiliar culture, Ralph reflected on how much he had come to embrace the people of a culture so far removed from that of West, and yet in a very humbling way, so close. He truly loved the Indian people and spoke many times of his desire to return there someday.

Ralphs’ devotion to improving our quality of life in the State of Utah was evident in his political engagements and appointments to which there were numerous. He was involved with various Salt Lake City/County and Washington City government positions from 1952, until his passing. A few of the notable hats he wore included working as City planner & deputy for the Salt Lake County Sheriff Department. Eventually he served as the County Commissioner and Chairman of the Salt Lake County commissioners’ office in the 70’s. He also enjoyed city planning and eventually moved to Southern Utah where he served as City Manager for City of Moab and more recently as City Manager of Washington City from 1985-2001. In fact as the City Manager, he envisioned the growth of “todays” Washington City long before our day and was instrumental in overcoming numerous political hurdles to his vision of bringing municipal power and a world class 18 hole golf course, at par with the finest in the world, to the Washington County, he succeeded and the Green Springs Golf course continues to attract visitors from around the globe! These commendable additions to the county also enriched the value of the nearby real estate in the Washington City area and eventually converted this sleepy rural town into a vibrant economically powerful city. It is also notable to mention that he also attempted a run for congress as well in 1974 and although not successful Ralph succeeded at many political accomplishments on both municipal and state levels and was held in high regard.

Ralph was always determined to do the right thing and made decisions that benefited his jurisdictions. He worked hard excelling in a variety of areas and received many distinctions and governmental awards in his career, but the most dear to him were those recognitions extended by his peers and co-workers.

Awards include:

  • Washington City Award for bringing Municipal Power to the city
  • Utah APA – American Planning Association: Meritorious Planner Award 1989
  • Washington City – Outstanding Male Citizen Award 1990-91
  • Utah Local Government Trust – Excellence In Risk Management
  • National Golf Foundation – Golf Management Honors 1991
  • Washington City – Award in appreciation of 17 years of service 1985-2001

All who got to know him loved him, but of course and as is the nature in politics, he did have his critics as evident in this Desert News clip of a quote he had made during a reunion of Salt Lake County Commissioners in 1989:

Ralph Y. McClure, Democratic commissioner from 1971 to 1976: “It was indeed a period of time I will never forget.” He apologized for not wearing the bright yellow suit that once prompted a reporter to ask “Where does a 200-pound canary sit?” to which he quipped, “Anywhere he wants.”

Following his retirement Ralph discovered that staying at home and not working was not for him so he volunteered in the area and also accepted miscellaneous jobs around the county including driving a local school bus. Ralph was a family man and although he regrets that his early life was consumed with work related activities, he later made quality time for his children and grandchildren. In fact he thrived on hugs and kisses and spent numerous years being “Papa” to his grandkids. He attended family events and all local sporting events he possibly could at which his children and grandchildren were participants. In fact he coached little league, probably tossing the ball many thousands of times, and was always present when needed.

Perhaps more importantly to him than anything else was his devotion and love to his loving wife Eileen. He made that abundantly clear in his written communiqué and personal expressions of how much she meant to him. Even during his final days when Eileen and family extended an expression of love to him in his weakened state, he would always make an attempt to convey his deep loving emotions. He loved having company and loved for his posterity to keep in touch. In fact he made sure that all who he loved knew they were loved and if they had been out of touch for too long, he would politely convey that as well.

Ralph loved to fly! He had a commercial pilots license and took many passengers to various locations earlier in his career. For a while he owned a motorbike and enjoyed riding it. Although his failing health dissuaded him from golfing later in life, Ralph was an avid golfer and enjoyed this activity as a pastime to relax and as a sport. He enjoyed playing the tenor sax, especially in his earlier years, and was an avid tennis player. On a lighter side, it may be surprising to many that he did a bit of modeling very early in life. He was always a kid at heart and loved engaging in fun activities with the kids, playing arcade games, watching movies and sporting events. Something he had always wanted to do was drive a Formula 1 racing car and on his 75th birthday he was surprised by this gift from his kids. He wasn’t too excited to go until we pulled up to the Andretti Racing School at the Las Vegas Speedway. He recorded in his journal: “This day will be a day I will never forget…what a thrill it was to climb into the racing car and drive at 142 mph…I drove 10 times around the track.” Perhaps the lowest points in Ralph’s life was when he lost his beloved 46-year-old son Garth Young McClure of Salt Lake City in June of 2005 and Barbara Lynn Gaven, Eileen’s daughter in 1994.

Ralph was a dear, humble man whose happiness was simply derived and may best be summarized by his own words:

“I love my wife, my kids, my grandkids, and our 2 dogs “Misty” and “Mindee”.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary McClure, son Garth McClure, daughter Barbara (Seth) Gaven, and brother, Paul (Judi) McClure. He is survived by his loving wife, Helen Eileen McClure St. George, UT, his sons Steven (Travis) McClure Sandy, UT, Brad (Tess) McClure SLC, UT, Bassam Faress Visalia, CA, and daughter Lisa (Lynn) Wood Ivins, UT.

Margaret-Cottam-EricksonMargaret Cottam Erickson passed away August 28th 2013 at Dixie Regional Medical Center surrounded by family after a brief illness. Margaret was born May 16th 1944 in St. George, Utah to Arthur Ronald and Verna Leavitt Cottam.

Margaret married Donn Durrell Erickson on June 19th 1969 in the St George LDS temple. Together they had 3 children. Sadly Donn succumbed to cancer on February 1st 1984, leaving Margret to raise 3 children on her own. She was grateful to have the help of family and friends who stepped in to offer assistance during those difficult years.

Margaret had many health concerns throughout her life, but she always met and overcame them with courage and faith. She never deviated from her love of the Savior and the teaching of the gospel, even in the last health challenge that faced her.

Margaret was raised and spent the majority if her life in St. George and loved the beauty of this area. She was a lifelong learner and was rarely without a book. She taught her children the love of culture, books, arts and education and was deeply proud of their academic accomplishments. She also had a deep passion for music and had a gifted voice which brought her awards and acclaim in her early life before health issues prevented her from enjoying the breadth of that gift. Margaret imparted this love of music to her children, for which they are grateful. In her later years Margret enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and bragged about them and their accomplishments whenever she had the chance.

She is survived by her children, Rick (Sharon) Erickson, Roger (Mindee) Erickson, and Nancy (Lehi) Holm, and 8 grandchildren who she loved and doted on. She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, and a sister.

Funeral services will be held Saturday September 7th 2013 at 12 noon at the flood street chapel located at 100 south 400 east in St. George.
