Sept. 29, 1923 – Dec. 16, 2018

Edwin J. Poehlmann, 95, passed away Dec. 16, 2018. He was born on Sept. 29, 1923, in Dinuba, California, to Edwin August and Helen (Rhodes) Poehlmann.

He married Ruth Marie Pickett in St. George, Utah, on April 4, 1954. Ed and Marie met at a dance at the Veyo Pool. Marie’s brother, Charlie, had invited Ed to the dance knowing that Marie would also be there.

In 1943, at 19 years of age, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He spent most of the next year at the University of Oregon in Eugene studying pre-meteorology.

In 1945 he was assigned to the Aircraft Direction Finding Group in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, to help pilots find their way (prior to the development of radar) over the Himalaya Mountains. During his service, the group was able to help over 700 pilots get over the mountains and land safely. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

In 1950, Ed received a geological engineering degree from the Colorado School of Mines. For the next 12 years he held several mining jobs, searched for uranium in the southwest United States for the Atomic Energy Commission, and was a consulting geologist for several companies.

In 1962, he and his family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where he took a position with Department of Energy contractor, EG&G, at the Nevada Test Site. He finished his career with the same company but in Las Vegas as a computer systems engineer.

Ed and Marie and the family spent a lot of time in Pine Valley, outside of St. George. He built a cabin there and the family enjoyed many weekends exploring the area. Ed had a great love of the outdoors that he passed on to his children. He spent a lot of time taking the kids rock hunting and exploring in the hills.

He also loved all creatures and instilled this love of animals in his children. Marie knew that if a stray animal showed up, it would soon be a member of the family.

Ed could fix anything; Marie often joked she’d never get anything new because if something was broken, he would repair it.

Ed was a private pilot and owned his own aircraft.

Ed and Marie retired in 1995 and moved back to St. George. This gave him time to pursue making ceramics and he was very skilled at it. He studied Native American cultures, especially the Navajo culture, and worked to integrate these traditional designs into his ceramic art. He was an avid gardener and cultivated a beautiful rose garden as well as many native wildflowers.

Ed is survived by his four children, Mary Ann Parlin, Edwin E. Poehlmann, Richard C. Poehlmann, and Ruthe J. Smith; three grandchildren; and brother George Poehlmann. He was preceded in death by his wife, mother, father and sister Jeanne (Poehlmann) Sanford.

No memorial service is planned at this time.

Friends and family are invited to sign the Poehlmann’s online guest book at Spilsbury Mortuary online.

Patrick Joseph Jennings

Jan. 24, 1960 – Dec. 19, 2018

Patrick Joseph “Joe” Jennings lived his life with vibrancy and grace.

He came into this world on Jan. 24, 1960, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, the fourth of four siblings. His mother deemed him her “joy pill,” and anyone who had the privilege to know him knows he wore the title well.

Peacefully and in the company of family, he left this life on Dec. 19, 2018, in Rockville, Utah, after a long struggle to recover from complications from surgeries meant to repair an old sports injury.

From the first sips of coffee and a bite of peach jam spread over toast, he would carry joy and happiness throughout his whole day. He loved and was made whole by the life he lived: He deeply adored his wife and children, he loved his restaurant and took great pleasure and satisfaction in cooking wonderful food for other people.

We saw him smiling with an all knowing nod of living the good life, he was ever grateful for the dream life he lived. He was a fair and conscientious man, loved by the family he made at the Bit & Spur Restaurant, where anyone who worked or ate there came to know it was a special place.

Joe was astounded by the beauty of Zion Canyon, by the pleasure of hot rocks and of a cool dip in the river. He loved to exert himself out on the roads and trails on runs and bike rides. He loved finding new music and enjoyed playing guitar and singing in his impassioned and soulful voice; he was a voracious reader of everything from novels to magazines to the pages of the morning paper.

He shot an excellent game of pool and loved sports, and in sitting with him and watching a game, you could not help but be infected by his passion and cheer.

You knew you were in good hands when you were with Joe: He put his special touch on everything, from making dinners to creating celebrations, vacations to lazy Sunday mornings with family. He was beloved by his wife and children, his friends and family, his neighbors and employees. His zest for life, his contagious smile and his bright, ringing laugh will be deeply missed.

Joe grew up in Santa Barbara, California. He graduated from Bakersfield High School and attended San Francisco State University before heading to Zion Canyon to live in Springdale and Rockville, Utah.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Barbara Jennings Hollister, Wilson Kenneth Jennings M.D., and J.J. Hollister III. He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia “Trish” Farnsworth Jennings, his children Hank and June Jennings, and his siblings Bill Jennings, Matt Jennings, Sara Jennings Pelton, Scott Hollister, George Hollister and Cate Wallenfels Hollister.

Please honor him by reaching out to others, by letting your eyes sparkle, by daring to live your dreams. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local NPR station, to Doctors Without Borders or to the charity of your choice.

Come celebrate Joe’s life with us on Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. at the Bit & Spur Restaurant.

Douglas Bruce Davis

May 19, 1954 – Dec. 1, 2018

Douglas Bruce Davis passed away on Dec. 1, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He valiantly fought a two-year battle with end-stage liver disease, liver transplant and finally T-cell lymphoma.

Doug was born on May 19, 1954, in England to George Douglas Davis and Barbara Jean Walton Davis. His father spent 21 years in the U.S. Air Force, which gave the family the opportunity to live in England, Germany, the Philippines and Japan. Doug loved those years and he grew to appreciate people and cultures that were different than his own. Known fondly by his family as “Dougie Bruce,” he was the oldest of nine children consisting of three boys and six girls: Lydia, Wendy, Eric, Janet, Christine, Darian, Jamie and Mike. He loved his siblings and they love him.

After graduating from Payson High School (Utah), Doug returned to Japan to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was instrumental in bringing Salt Lake City and Matsumoto, Japan, together as sister cities. He loved the Japanese people, food and customs.

Upon returning from his mission he went on a blind date with Miriam Johnson and they were married a year later in the Manti Temple. They were blessed with three daughters and two sons:  Lecia A. Davis, Amy C. Davis, Stephen D. Davis (Julia), Kimberly S. Prince (Chandler), and Eric J. Davis (Taylor). The family grew to welcome one amazing granddaughter, Eva Hughes, and 10 rambunctious grandsons: Joel, Samuel and Aaron Hughes; Jacob, Landon, Benjamin and Evan Davis; Luke Prince; and Jude and Eli Davis, who will welcome a baby sister to make a dozen in January.

Doug adored his grandchildren, as attested to by anybody who would stand still long enough to listen to him brag, complete with pictures and videos on his phone. He was the World’s Best Pappy; making the grandkids laugh by being silly, water-time in the jacuzzi, reading books with gusto, playing at the park and snuggling with them to watch cartoons. He was blessed with the ability to be childlike with them and they truly loved their Pappy.

Doug’s free spirit and entrepreneurial desires made self-employment the perfect career fit. In 1984, he moved his young family to Torrance, California, and started Champions Maintenance Services, which he successfully ran for 34 years.

Being self-employed afforded him the opportunity to watch almost every drill dance competition, track meet, soccer match, baseball, softball, basketball and football game that his children competed in. He coached Little League baseball for a few years, but his true love was coaching soccer. He had a talent for explaining the game in a way that clicked with young minds.

He traveled the country coaching and/or watching his children play soccer in competitive leagues, high school and college teams. He was a fixture on the sidelines, ready with Gatorade for those coming off the pitch. His favorite English Premier League team was Liverpool and we know where he was on Dec. 2 when Liverpool beat Everton 1-0. We’re sure he got scolded later for interfering with earthly sports outcomes, claiming ignorance to St. Peter regarding the new heavenly rules. Our family motto is the Liverpool fight song, “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

Fishing with his brother, Eric, was a favorite pastime. He also truly enjoyed spending quality time with his many golfing buddies. Doug competed in the Utah Amateur Open in the early ’70s, was a Gladstan Golf Course Club Champion and has two certified hole-in-ones. He was on the board of the LDS Golf Association of Southern California for many years. Doug taught all of his children to play golf and was working on the grandkids.

Another gift Doug passed along to his family was his great love of music, all different genres and artists. We had a lot of fun when he would play the guitar and we would join in singing. Doug had an awesome playlist that we all enjoyed.

Doug was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many callings throughout the years. One of his favorite callings was being an Early Morning Seminary Teacher in Torrance, California. He was a great storyteller and make the Scriptures come alive.

Doug was loved; an easy and loyal friend. His family misses him immensely. He was preceded in death by his parents and youngest brother, Mike.

Funeral services

  • Doug’s memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 29, at the LDS chapel located at 124 N. Valley View Drive, St. George, Utah.
  • Visitation will be at 11 a.m. Services will begin at noon. If you have the jersey or scarf of your favorite soccer team, you are encouraged to wear it.

Karen Wright

April 28, 1938 – Dec. 21, 2018

Karen Wright entered heaven’s gate on Dec. 21, 2018. For the last year she fought hard against a rare autoimmune disease (lichen planus). The disease, coupled with the side effects of her treatment, ultimately ended her precious life.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Murray, her daughters Sheri and Monica, 12 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.  She was predeceased by daughters, Shelly, Keri and Valeri.

Mom had a degree in education and spent much of her working life teaching but being a wife, mother and grandmother were her life’s passion and joy. Family and friends were everything to her. Mom was the epitome of service and selflessness.  Pretty sure 70 percent of Washington County has received service and/or cards from mom and many more outside that area.

Mom loved family history. She has gathered and written dozens of histories herself. Grateful for her and my dad’s heritage she wanted to know everything she could about their ancestors. She and dad’s histories were the last she worked on, fortunately completing this effort before she got sick.

Mom had an unwavering faith in God, believing his purpose was in everything. If we had faith in His love for us, we could endure well the challenges we would face in this life. Few people have been faced with life’s struggles to the degree my mom has. In all this and in the happier times as well she put others needs before her own. This came naturally to her because she loved so much. It’s that simple.

Mom has said many times she and the Lord were “going to have a little chat” about taking her kids too soon. I’d love to hear how that goes. Until then, she is having the most glorious reunion imaginable right now. Not only with her loving family that has gone before her but with some of the countless people whose lives she touched.

Until we see you again mom, we’ll do our best to follow the example you set for us.
