Nov. 9, 1955 – July 18, 2019

Matthew Staheli, 63, died peacefully at home July 18, 2019, from liver disease. He was born Nov. 9, 1955, to Karl and Carita (Jones) Staheli. Matt grew up in Richfield and St. George before serving a full-time mission in the California Sacramento Mission, where his testimony and love of Christ became the cornerstone of his life.

After his mission, Matt returned to work at Dixie Hospital. His first day back, he met his eternal companion, Susan Snow. They were married in the St. George Temple on July 15, 1977. They spent the next decade going to school. Matt graduated in nursing from Weber State, and went to school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist in Canton, Ohio.

His first job out of school was in Ogden. They then moved to Payson and finally to Cedar City where Matt worked as an anesthetist for the past 26 years. Matt had a great blend of professional skills and a calm, gentle and kind demeanor. He was described by one patient as “a man who truly has his halo on straight.”

Matt had a deep and abiding love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. Matt served as a bishop, both of an SUU student ward and most recently for his beloved Fiddlers Canyon Ward. He also served in two stake presidencies. He had a special love for the youth and children of the church. In all of his callings, he loved both the people he served and those with whom he served.

His playful spirit endeared him to many, but he also had no problem being forthright when the occasion warranted. He is remembered by family, friends, patients, colleagues, ward and stake members, and total strangers for his kind heart, quick wit, and gentle soul and as someone who sought to ease pain wherever he found it.

Matt and Sue were blessed with five wonderful children, of whom he was very proud. He loved spending time with his kids, golfing (mostly laughing), scuba diving, travelling and working in his workshop. His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving when he was surrounded by family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sue, his children, David, Sara, Daniel (Jenny), Jacob (Whitney), and Rachel, his two grandchildren James and Avery, and his brothers Allen (Suzanne), Ron (Jan), Howard (Francelle), and eleven nieces and nephews. He was born Aug. 10, 1944 in Cedar City, Utah. He spent his childhood in Virgin, Utah, and Southern California. He was a graduate of California’s Rosemead High School class of 62.

Soon after completing school, Jim enlisted in The U.S. Air Force on Oct. 1, 1963. Most of his service was at Hopedale Air Station in Hopedale, Labrador, during the Vietnam War. He was part of the 923rd Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, a vital link in the NATO radar network.

She also had an extensive purse/bag collection. Doris was a social person and thoroughly enjoyed being with her sorority sisters and dear friends.

Doris thought the world of her grandkids and never missed an opportunity to make each one of them feel special. Each personal celebration or holiday was a huge event that Doris would orchestrate to ensure we all knew she loved us.

Doris had family history as a high priority. In fact, it led to finding her birth father shortly after joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After decades of searching, they found out they only lived 30 miles apart.

She is survived by her children Wade and Renee, son-in-law Kyle, grandchildren Hayden, Hunter, Lauren, and Spencer; brothers: Jim Stevenson, Jon Stevenson (John), Michael Haney, Tommy Haney; sisters: Janet Newsom (Danny), Neva Garrett, and Tammy Garrett (Danny). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and numerous dear friends.

She is preceded in death by husband Charlie L. Carper – we know that it was a joyful reunion. She is also preceded in death by her mother Thursa Haney, stepfather Donald Haney, father James Stevenson and stepmother Rafela Stevenson.

She married Larry Dean Bergen on June 5, 1959, in the Logan Utah Temple. They had 5 children, 25 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. She had 3 brothers and one half-sister.

When Lynn was 5 years old the family moved to Ogden, Utah. Shortly afterward, her father was killed while working for the railroad in a tragic accident. As the oldest living child in the family, Lynn had to take on many responsibilities. She cared for her younger siblings, worked hard, and helped her mother. Later in life she worked for Federal Express in various positions.

Her husband’s employment took her from Utah to Ohio, Wisconsin, California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina and Arizona. For many years of their marriage, Larry had long business trips, including many overseas, which meant she had to care for their young family and household on her own while he was away.

Bruce Craig Solomon, born March 15, 1949, burned with incandescent destiny.

When Agent Orange finally caught up with him on July 29, 2019, his work had brightened thousands of hearts and minds.

Bruce was one of my mightiest resources in things concerning veterans. He was a tremendous help to so many.

He was a particularly unique person and generous in heart. The world seems darker without his passion for laughter, sports and music.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Allred Solomon, his four children, Denise Sanchez (Tony), Layla Hardy (Todd), Jeff Solomon (Jen) and Laurie Long (Russ), 14 beautiful grandchildren and four siblings. He loved his family, his many friends, his students and his clients.

Kathryn Blaire Leavitt, 27, passed away July 27, 2019. She was born May 21, 1992, in Salt Lake City. Her mother is Marie Leavitt. She was second of three children.

She was the peanut-butter between two slices of bread – Vincent Brock Leavitt, her older brother and Gregory Beau Leavitt, her younger brother. She was the laughter and love that helped hold the family together through life’s trials and confusions.

Blaire grew up in a loving family, her mother insisting her children show respect, kindness and love to each other.

After living in Salt Lake City a few years, Blaire’s family moved to Bunkerville, Nevada, and lived next to her grandparents, Vincent and Kathryn Leavitt. She was an active and happy child. She wanted to be included in all activities at home, school and church. She was always surrounded by friends and family.

Upon her graduation from Virgin Valley High School in Mesquite, Nevada, Blaire went to Paul Mitchell The School in St. George, Utah, and obtained her license as a cosmetologist.

Blaire lived through life’s trials with a smile on her face. While living and studying in St. George, her life became entwined with her Polynesian heritage. She found her Polynesian family and learned of her culture and another side of her life she had not experienced except in stories and pictures. She enjoyed it so very much. She learned her Tongan language, dances, customs and how to express her joy and happiness in another way.

Blaire worked at various jobs in St. George and Salt Lake City to supplement her cosmetology work. In all her work she was a happy and giving friend. She always wanted everyone to get along and be happy in their lives and with each other. Blaire will be remembered by those who knew her for her love and kindness.
