June 15, 1940 – Aug. 19, 2019

James “Jim” Harvey Griffith 79, of Veyo, Utah passed away peacefully on Aug. 19, 2019, after a valiant battle with cancer.

James was born on June 15, 1940 in San Jose, California. He was the second child and only son born to Zera and Pearl Griffith. At the age of 6, Jim and his family moved to Angel’s Camp, California, where he attended Mark Twain Elementary School and Bret Harte High School. He shared happy childhood memories of roaming the hills in Calaveras County with his dog, Tito and of catching and selling frogs for the annual Jumping Frog Jubilee.

Jim graduated from High School in 1959 where he excelled as a track athlete and musically, as a trumpeter in the marching band. Jim was also a gifted visual artist and throughout his life created many beautiful oil paintings and pieces of Native American artwork.

He received a technical degree and special training to become a journeyman pressman. Jim worked at the Los Angeles Times newspaper and later oversaw the printing of The Daily Universe at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Jim was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served many years as a Scoutmaster and Young Men leader. He loved the Scouting program and assisting young men in receiving their Eagle Scout Award. He also served as the ward and stake preparedness specialist many times. Jim was a good neighbor and friend to all.

On March 30, 1967, Jim and Penney L. Smith were sealed in the Salt Lake City temple and together raised their four daughters in Payson, Genola, and Provo, Utah, making many cherished and life-long friendships during this time. Jim beautified every place that he ever lived and was quite the handyman. He was an avid gardener and gentleman’s farmer teaching his daughters how to plant and harvest large gardens and orchards while also caring for an assortment of small farm animals. He later retired in Veyo, Utah, and continued to enjoy the blessing of treasured friendships among his neighbors.

Jim loved spending time outdoors with his family enjoying God’s creations and teaching his grandchildren how to garden, fish, hunt, or pan for gold. He also loved family history and doing genealogy and temple work with his sister, children, and grandchildren.

We are especially grateful for the last four years of memories that we were able to make with our father and grandfather. On Dec. 3, 2015, Jim made local headlines after a rare collision with a large buck deer on Highway 18. He spent six weeks in ICU at Dixie Intermountain Hospital and many more months miraculously recovering from many extensive injuries. He inspired us all as a true survivor.

Jim is survived by his beloved sister, Zera Diane Rees of Whidbey Island, WA; daughters, Angie (Lavoy) Shepherd, Veyo, UT; Wendy (Mark) Hullinger, SLC, UT; Jennifer Baldwin, Springville, UT; Jamie Griffith, Rexburg, ID, 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and younger sister, Jaci Tonkin.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Carly and all of Intermountain Hospice for their kindness and assistance in caring for our father.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 23, at the Veyo Chapel, 176 East Center St at 11 a.m. with a viewing one-hour prior. A private interment and graveside service will be held on the following day at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, Salt Lake City.

Nov. 20, 2000 – Aug. 15, 2019

Skyler Ladd Armstrong left this world unexpectedly early on Aug. 15, 2019. While his life was taken quickly, we are comforted that he was escorted to heaven by ministering angels and family ancestors who have passed to that other side.

Skyler was born on Nov. 20, 2000, in Washington City, Utah, son of Brandon and Wendy McEntire Armstrong, long-time residents of Washington City.

He attended schools in St George and Washington City, recently graduating from Desert Hills High School in May of this year. He enjoyed writing and making music with his brother and friends, skateboarding, snowboarding, wakeboarding, kendamas, hunting, fishing, camping and many more activities with his family and friends.

He was always a shy baby, but as he grew up, so did his outgoing personality. He loved to be the life of the party and always made sure everyone was having fun along with a loving, caring and compassionate friendship he gave to those around him.

This kept us on the edge of our seats, but he loved the rush of life, and he will be missed dearly by those who loved him. “Fly High Sky,” we love you!

Skyler is survived by his parents, Brandon and Wendy Armstrong, and his brother, Dylan. He also leaves behind maternal grandparents, Fred and JoAnn Ball of Pocatello, Idaho, Kay Weyer of Yuma, Arizona, Scott McEntire of Clinton, Utah, and Bruce and Lyn Armstrong of American Fork, Utah. He is also survived by dozens of cousins, uncles and aunts, most living in Utah.

Skyler was an organ donor, and because of his youth, health and strength, he was able to save and help numerous individuals and families with his generous gift of life.

A private service will be held commemorating his short but meaningful life with family and friends. To view an online webcast of the service scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 24, at 1:50 p.m. MDT, go to: webcast.funeralrecording.com and use login Event: 23539 and Password: SLA2019.

Nov. 6, 1999 – Aug. 15, 2019

Eli Merlin Dutson was born Nov. 6, 1999, to Lucricia “Crish” and Bygnal Dutson. He was born into a very large family who surrounded him with love and affection from the moment he came into this world. The youngest and best looking of his father’s sons, Merlin always wanted to keep up with and be just like his older brothers.

Ever energetic, he loved spending time in the great outdoors, especially with his family. He was wise beyond his years, inquisitive, determined by nature and was a quick learner. Merlin grew into a very beautiful, strong and independent young man, with immeasurable talent and potential. In his late teens, he enjoyed going alone at night to the mountains above the city to see the lights below.

Merlin loved and was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had a big smile, a bigger heart, and an infectious laugh, which brought light and joy into the lives of all who loved him. His thoughtful and peaceful manner can never be replaced, and a giant hole is left by his passing. His heart was always with his loving father and friend, with whom he has now found peace.

He will forever live on in our hearts as our favorite son, brother, companion and friend. He is survived by his family, who treasure all of the many good memories he left behind.

Pearlie Myrleen Johnson Mitchell Coleman

Dec. 31, 1931 – Aug. 29, 2019
Our dear mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, Pearlie Myrleen Johnson Mitchell Coleman, age 87, passed away peacefully in her Salt Lake City home in the early hours of August 29, 2019 with close family by her side.
She is survived by her sons: Louis (Cece), Lyle (Debbie), Kurtis (Joann), and Randy, stepsons: Steve (Karen), Mark, Thomas (Stephanie), her siblings: Blanche, Utahna, Audrey, Jack, and Jerri, Mitchell grandchildren: Jennifer, Lauren, Lisa, Michelle, Melissa, Emily, Jessica, Amanda, Derek, Abbey, Coleman grandchildren: Sharayah, Seth, Jackson, Michelle, Leanne, and 26 great-grandchildren.
Pearlie was the most sweet, kind and generous person who truly loved everyone. She loved giving to others and bringing peace and love into their lives. She was the hardest worker and never complained. Precious little children were the highlight of her life.
Pearlie was born on Dec. 31, 1931 to her parents, Emily Molissa Turner, and Fred Stevens Johnson in her family’s home in Holden, Utah. She was blessed to be a sister in a large family of 17 children. One of her greatest joys in life was to dance and have long talks with her sisters. Even in their later years, they would perform dances at the senior citizen center in Fillmore, Utah and could be found laughing on a front porch together often.
The early years of Pearlie’s life were full of farm life and helping her parents and siblings. She graduated from Millard High School and was a member of the Pep Club, Marching Band, and a Class Officer.
Pearlie was lucky to have two dear husbands. She married San Luis Mitchell on May 27, 1950 and raised four wonderful boys with him. She was later blessed with grandchildren from each of them and cherished her role as mother and grandmother, and wife to San. After San’s early passing, she married Harold Schofield Coleman on June 4, 1982. Together they ran his Coleman’s Electric business, tended a vast garden, raised sheep at their home in Fillmore, and enjoyed spending special time with their grandchildren. Pearlie served as a strong matriarch to our family.
If there is one thing in the world that was constant for Pearlie all her life, it was her membership and activity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She spoke of the church often and relished her callings, ward parties, Relief Society, and missionaries. When asked what she was most proud of in life, she replied “the missionaries.” She helped many missionaries and she served a church service mission herself, along with Hal, in their later years.

May 15, 1936 – Sept. 6, 2019

Ned Cyril Budge, 83, passed away peacefully Sept. 6, 2019, after an extended battle with dementia.

Ned was born to Cyril Spencer Budge and Moselle Michaelson on May 15, 1936, the fourth of six children. He grew up in Paris, Idaho, where he attended Fielding High School. He sang in both the choir and quartet in school. He was a class officer his sophomore year and played basketball. When school was not in session, he worked on the Budge Ranch run by his father in Nounan, Idaho.

Ned served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Southern California where he met and later married Agnes Joan Faber. They were blessed with four children.

Ned graduated from Utah State University and supported his family by teaching math and science at Logan Junior High for 30-plus years. He had a wonderful time taking his students to Arches National Monument at the end of each year. He spent the week showing them many of the things they talked about in science. He was a flight instructor for several years, then switched to driver’s education for adults. He loved teaching many of the international students attending Utah State University.

Ned had quite the sense of humor. He and a brother greased a railroad track that ran through the ranch and up a small hill resulting in a Federal Marshall making a trip to visit their father. He liked firecrackers and surprised multiple individuals with his fireworks and imagination. Short-sheeted beds and cars jacked up on cinder blocks all brought shoulder shaking and muffled laughter from this fun filled man.

Ned loved learning and inventing. He was always putting together things to make life easier and better for his family. He truly enjoyed the out-of-doors and spent many hours motorcycling, snowmobiling and four wheeling. He loved sharing his passions with friends and family.

His children considered him to be a little stern and straight forward, but he had a heart of gold and would have given the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Later in life he carried small gifts around in the trunk of his car to distribute to strangers and friends when the prompting came.

Ned lost his sweet companion, Joan, in 1993 to cancer. A few years later he became re-acquainted with a former classmate, Ann Marie Dunford Rogers. They were married in 1996.

Ned and Ann served three missions: Bangkok Thailand as humanitarian missionaries, with an extension to Xian China; Salt Lake City in the Missionary Department as senior missionary coordinators; Philippines, San Pablo mission. They also served as temple ordinance workers in the St George Temple for 10 years.

Ned is survived by his wife Ann; his children: Brenda (Lance) Bohm, Tod (Lezlie), Lannice (Mark) Hall, and Brent (Holly). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and Ann’s children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ned is preceded in death by his wife, Joan; parents; and siblings.

Special thanks to the staff of Wentworth at the Meadows Memory Care and Zions Way Hospice.
