(July 11, 1930 – August 8, 2014)

John MacArthur Wright, age 84, passed away on August 8, 2014 at his home in Bloomington from affects incidental to Alzheimer’s disease. He was born July 11, 1930 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to John Wheeler Wright, Jr. and Lela Bell Staker; he was the first of two sons. He married Peggy Oldroyd on May 4, 1955 at the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

J. MacArthur (“Mac”) Wright graduated from Boise Jr. College in 1951 where he served as Student Body President. He continued his studies at the University of Utah and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1953. Following his graduation from the University of Utah, Mac served in the U.S. Air Force as a navigator from 1953-1957. He was honorably discharged at the rank of captain. Following his service in the Air Force, Mac graduated from Stanford Law School in 1959. He was licensed to practice law in California, Nevada, and Utah.

Mac’s practice of law spanned 48 years. He was one of four principal lawyers pleading the case of nearly 1,200 individuals from small rural communities in Southern Utah, Southern Nevada, and Northwest Arizona alleging deaths and injuries from radioactive fallout that dusted the soil, animals, and people located downwind (called “Downwinders”) from above-ground nuclear testing from 1951-1958, and briefly in 1962, at the Nevada Test Site. The case served as the catalyst for the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act signed into law by George H. W. Bush in 1990. As of July 2014, 25,804 claims under the Act have been approved compensating victims. A soft-spoken man, Mac enjoyed practicing law in Southern Utah where he established enduring friendships with law partners, fellow attorneys and clients. Mac was a gentleman lawyer who believed that the practice of law was a profession and not a business.

Mac served as president of the St. George Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and Dixie Little League. He has been a member of Bloomington Country Club since 1971. Mac enjoyed reading, golfing, the outdoors, and taking his family camping. With his wife, Peggy, he especially enjoyed camping at Fish Lake, Utah where Peggy lived during the summers as a child until age ten while her father worked as a fishing guide. Mac enjoyed coaching his daughters and sons on various athletic teams. He was an Eagle Scout and served as a scoutmaster as a younger man.

Mac was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served as a bishop, a counselor to the bishop, a member of the high council, and in the young men’s organization.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; three children: Susan (Ron) Burns of Salt Lake City; Colette (Stan) Jeppsen of La Crescenta, CA; Jonathan (Linda) Wright of St. George; daughter-in-law, Linda Fry Wright of St. George; brother, Dennis (Anna Lee) Wright; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. Mac was predeceased by his son, Kevin MacArthur Wright.

(October 12, 1928 – August 10, 2014)

Yvonne Sandberg, 85, passed away August 10, 2014. Born October 12, 1928 in Logan, Utah, Yvonne was the first of six children of William and Edna Parker. She is now reunited with her husband of 62 years, Arthur L. Sandberg.

Yvonne was a Utah State University educator in every sense of the word. Her home and her classrooms were organized places of love and learning, and students from California to Europe have continued to correspond with her, reliving their memories of a treasured year in her class. These organizational talents transferred to St. George where Art and she retired. They enjoyed golf, activities and new friends at Bloomington Country Club.

No one loved a friend, nor was anyone a better friend than Yvonne. Whatever her passion; raising kids, travel, community activism, knitting, golf or bridge, each venue brought her dear friends.

Her daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters and nieces link her with shopping trips, white gloves, matching sun suits, days at the beach, and Madame Alexander dolls. She put a positive spin on everything she touched, and left so many of us believing we were her absolute best friend…and we were.

Her love story with Art began in middle school and transcended time and their world. Theirs was a marriage of respect, reverence, and pure love. He cherished his bride and she honored her King Arthur. Their marriage was an example to friends and family and truly surpassed what a union was meant to be. Yvonne has brought good to her world and will continue to do the same in eternity.

Yvonne is survived by her sisters: Adeline Parkin and Rosalie Hazeldine; sisters-in-law: Joyce Parker, Jean Melick and Kay Hayes; and her brother-in-law, Dick Sandberg. She is also survived by her daughters: Shauna (Scott) Leggat of North Carolina and Shelle Sandberg of California. Yvonne’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Ian, Emma and Annanell Leggat, Graham, Susana and Curren Leggat, Brianne, Daniel Caroline, James, Henry and Weslin Johnson, Alise, Jason, Olive and Miles Porter, Muihrienne Leggat, and Cameron Leggat.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Smile Train, a charity Art and Yvonne loved.

Robert Nelson Stewart

rod(April 13, 1922-August 15, 2014)

Robert “Bob” Nelson Stewart passed away from a stroke and illness related to age on August 15, 2014, at the Beehive Home in Hurricane, Utah.

Bob was born on April 13, 1922, to John Moffitt Stewart and Vida Elizabeth Riding Stewart in St. George, Utah. He was raised in LaVerkin, Utah, by his mother and stepfather, Junius J. Duncan.

Bob served in the U.S. Navy and was trained in radio construction and repair, and radio communications. He served in Europe, France, Italy and North Africa on a small landing craft control, manned by only seven men. In North Africa he was able to work in an office as secretary to an officer on base. He was sent to San Diego, California for a short time as ship’s company typist secretary. From there he was sent to the South Pacific arena on the destroyer USS Strong where he saw battle action that affected him throughout his life. Though he never discussed the details of the action he saw, he was proud of the time he was in the service of the United States and often made mention of the fact that he served on the USS Strong.

Following his service he moved back to LaVerkin to work. He met a cute young girl from Enterprise, Verda Louise Terry, and they were married in the St. George LDS Temple on July 31, 1946. Bob completed electrician schooling in Provo, Utah. While looking for permanent work, Bob and Verda moved back to LaVerkin and then moved to Enterprise and to Acoma, Nevada, to work with Union Pacific Railroad. Within a few years, they settled in St. George where they raised their family.

After working for several different companies, Bob was a custodian for the St. George Post Office for a time, but his abilities as repairman/electrician eventually led him to work with Pickett Lumber Company where he became known as a great “fix anything” repairman. Later, he was awarded a contract to maintain the Federal Office Building in St. George. After working there several years, the government changed the contract status of his employment and Bob was hired as maintenance engineer at the Hilton Inn, where he worked for eight years before retiring.

Bob always served in the LDS church. He was ordained an elder before his service in the Navy. After the war he served as stake missionary, seventy, and high priest group secretary, instructor, and historian. He was thrilled when he and Verda received their mission call to Portland, Oregon, in 1988. They enjoyed making friends with missionaries, members, and nonmembers in Sweet Home, Oregon, for the time that they were there. Upon their return, they were called as ordinance workers in the St. George LDS Temple, where they served until they were unable to continue.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Beth; brother, Evan (who died in childhood); and one grandson, Jacob Stewart. He is survived by his wife, Verda; sisters, Grace Church and LaRee Campbell; children Linda (Lynn) Stout of Bloomington, Utah, Paul Stewart of Ogden, Utah, Gail (Bruce) Christensen of Kaysville, Utah, June (David) Jeffery of LaVerkin, Utah and Howard (Debra) Stewart of Henderson, Nevada; 19 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.

Bob loved living in St. George and had many friends. As life got too difficult to manage on their own, Bob and Verda were moved to the Beehive House in Hurricane, Utah, in December 2012 where they were able to receive care and support necessary for their aging years. Dad missed the St. George friends and sitting on his front porch across from the park, where he could visit with passers-by. He always worked with his hands and if there was anything to fix, he was working on it – if it could be fixed, he could do it. He was a good example to his children to hang on and never give up, of a good work ethic, and being responsible for your actions. Bob was always early with assignments and to meetings and was known for that “hurry and get it done” ethic. The family is grateful to the caring staff and residents at the Beehive Home, the caring members of the Hurricane 15th ward, and St. George 10th ward, beloved friends in their St. George neighborhood that was their home for over 57 years, and many others who assisted in taking care of Bob’s and Verda’s needs as they aged. Caregivers throughout the years include nurses, aides and medical professionals from Southern Utah Home Health, the Five County Association of Governments, Applegate Home Health, and Dixie Home Health and Hospice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, telephone 435-673-4221. For condolences and funeral listings please visit the Metcalf website.

image001 (2)(March 22, 1927-August 18, 2014)

Verda Louise Terry Stewart passed away from illness related to age on August 18, 2014 at the Beehive Home in Hurricane, Utah.

Verda was born March 22, 1927 to Amos F. Terry and Eunetta Elliker in Delta, Utah and was number 9 of ten children. When she was young her parents moved from Lehi, Utah to Santaquin, Utah to Payson, Utah and finally settled in Enterprise, Utah where Verda spent the majority of her growing up years.

She attended school in St. George one year while her parents served a temple mission, and graduated from Woodward Jr. High School. When their mission was complete they moved back to Enterprise where Verda graduated from Enterprise High. She worked picking up potatoes in the fall during her growing up years, to earn money for her school tuition, clothes and other needs and wants.

She met Robert Nelson Stewart in 1946 and they were married that year on July 31st. The early years of their marriage moved them from Provo, Utah to LaVerkin, Utah, to work on the railroad in Acoma, Nevada and back to Enterprise, before settling in St. George to manage health needs of one of their children in a warmer climate.

Robert and Verda were blessed with five children. They have 19 grandchildren (one deceased), and 33 great-grandchildren. They gave a place in their home for three foster children – each for a short period of time when their children were young.

Verda was an active member of the LDS church and served in many callings through the years, including primary, scouts, MIA, and Relief Society. She and Robert served a mission in the Portland Oregon Mission from 1988-1989 and a mission in the St. George temple after their return from Portland, until health issues required a change.

She is preceded in death by her husband; Robert Nelson Stewart, her parents; six sisters – May (Roy) Staheli, Jennie (Gordon) Swapp, Francis (Evan) Earl, Idella Terry, Ivena (Elmon) Hendrickson, Vilate (Preston) Robinson; one brother – Amos Franklin Terry; and one grandson – Jacob Stewart. She is survived by her brothers Louis Vee (Delores) Terry, and Orvil Kay (Arlene-deceased) Terry; children Linda (Lynn) Stout, Paul Robert Stewart, Gail (Bruce) Christensen, June (David) Jeffery, and Howard Kay (Debra) Stewart; their grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Verda was a good cook and spent 22 years in the Washington County School Lunch program. She loved music and was in band in high school, but her favorite music was singing. She and her three best girlfriends sang in the halls at school, down the streets of town, and performed at most of the events in Enterprise. She would tell stories of crowds gathering if they practiced outside in someone’s yard. The world was a quieter place then and they could be heard all over town. As Verda got older her voice gave out and she experienced a great hearing loss. Those two changes were the most difficult things she had to bear, especially where music was concerned. She took up oil painting later in life and found a great deal of joy in creating beautiful scenes on canvas. Then as her eye sight failed she felt that loss, those paintings became cherished possessions. Her greatest joy was in her husband, her children, and her grandchildren.

Bob and Verda moved to the Beehive Home in Hurricane, Utah in December 2012 when care at home became difficult to manage. The family wishes to extend appreciation to the caring staff and residents at the Beehive Home, also to the caring members of the Hurricane 15th ward and St. George 10th ward, and beloved friends in their St. George neighborhood that was home for over 57 years, visiting teachers, and caregivers throughout the years from Southern Utah Home Health, the Five County Association of Governments, Applegate Home Health, and Dixie Home Health and Hospice.

Jensen, Kimball obit(October 4, 1951-August 16, 2014)

Kimball Earl Jensen, 62, of Desert Springs, Arizona, and Mesquite, Nevada, died in his home on August 16, 2014.

Kimball was born to Earl and Carol Jensen in Fort Ord, California, on October 4, 1951. He married Brenda Lynn Jensen (Williams) on September 3, 1972. Together, they enjoyed a life of travel, children, and grandchildren.

As a small child, Kimball traveled extensively with his parents and first three sisters, Kristina, Judy, and Tamara. His family lived in Israel, Sacramento, California, Washington D.C., and Ogden, Utah. The family then moved to Mexico until he was a teenager. He attended the New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell, New Mexico, before he set off again to explore the world and its skies. These early life adventures shaped his bold and unique perspective on life and learning. He ultimately settled in Southern Utah, where he and Brenda raised their three daughters.

Kimball loved to fly. He was fascinated by the subject of air and space. He earned his pilot’s license in his early 20s, and was an avid reader of military and aeronautical history. Kimball was passionate about travel and exploration. He loved to see the world, and inspired many others to do the same. He was a talented drummer and vocalist. He took great pleasure in music. He played a diverse range of albums during his travels, resulting in memorable soundtracks for all of his travel adventures.

Kimball also was a licensed contractor. He designed and built custom homes throughout Southern Utah. He was well-known for the aesthetic architectural designs and clever features he created.

Kimball was intent on being of service to his community. He first became an EMT in the early 80s, which led him to a remarkable career in medicine. In 1984, Kimball received his degree in Nursing, with high honors, from Weber State College via Dixie College and Southern Utah State College (currently known as Southern Utah University).

Over the next 30 years, Kimball led the charge as a registered nurse in emergency rooms in Utah and Nevada, helping to save thousands of lives. Kimball first worked in the ER at Dixie Medical Center, in St. George, UT, where he helped to establish its first fixed-wing Life Flight unit. Later, Kimball also worked in the ER at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, NV, and then moved his practice to North Vista Hospital in North Las Vegas in the early ‘90s. He accepted a position as booking nurse at the Las Vegas City Jail in 1999.

In 2003, the open road called, and he took a one-year hiatus to drive 18-wheeler trucks from coast-to-coast for Dick Simon Trucking. He returned to saving lives in 2004, when he accepted a position in the ER at Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite, Nevada, where he practiced medicine for another 10 years before hanging up his stethoscope to prepare for retirement.

At the time of his death, Kimball was building a self-sustaining, eco-friendly home, greenhouse, and garden, the designs of which are marvels of engineering. He was also planning the next family vacation, as well as a European trip with Brenda.

Kimball was a brilliant, commanding, and adventurous leader and visionary. He was a devoted and cherished husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, friend, and mentor. Words cannot describe our grief in losing him, or the depth of our gratitude for being loved by him.

Kimball is survived by his loving wife, Brenda, and their three daughters: Janna Jensen Lewis (Michael), Sandra Lee (Charlie), Karen Macias (Joe); seven grandchildren: Kimball, Savannah, Thomas, Olivia, Sofia, Fiona, and Lucia; and his many, dearly-loved siblings; all of whom he was fiercely proud. Kimball was preceded in death by his parents, Carol and Earl Jensen, his brothers Joseph Owen and Larsen Earl, and his sisters, Leticia and Nina.

Charles Fredrick Twitchell

2014-08-26 18:28(July 26, 1923 – August 24, 2014)

On August 24, 2014, Charles Fredrick Twitchell slipped the mortal bands of this earth to go home to his Heavenly Father and his sweet, eternal wife. Charles (Charlie) was surrounded by family and those who loved him as he passed into his new celestial home.

Charlie was born July 26, 1923, in St. George, Utah to Edrick and Ella Twitchell. Charlie spent most of his life in his beloved hometown of Enterprise, Utah. His father died while Charlie was still a baby, leaving him and his four brothers to be raised by a single mother during the Great Depression. Growing up in hard times made Charlie a tough man at an early age. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and fought in the European Front of World War II as an infantry man. He was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in the Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944. Near the end of his service, he married his hometown sweetheart, Juliette (Etta) Adams on August 1, 1945. Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George LDS Temple.

After his release from the service, Charlie and Etta raised seven children, 47 grandchildren and 113 great grandchildren. They raised their children together, working side by side on a family farm where they raised a variety of crops. It was there that they taught their children the importance of hard work, a trait still valued by their children and grandchildren. To help financial ends meet, Charlie worked a full shift in a nearby iron mine, and then worked on his farm in his off hours. Through sheer will and hard work, Charlie became one of the most successful farmers in the Enterprise area.

Despite long hours of hard work, Charlie had many interests and hobbies. He loved deer hunting throughout his life. He spent days in the hills near Enterprise during the deer hunt with his wife, children and grandchildren. Filling a tag was secondary in importance to spending time with his family in the same hills that he grew up in. Charlie loved to fish. Later in life, he and his wife were able to buy a small summer home in Alaska where they could spend their days chasing the next big catch.

Charlie loved to be surrounded by children, especially his own grandchildren. He rarely had much time at home without the company of the children that he loved so much. Charlie also had a very kind heart towards animals. He loved dogs and was never very far from a canine companion. During his workday on the farm, he often encountered wounded or abandoned wildlife, which he would bring home for his young children to nurse back to health.

Charlie is survived by six of his seven children: Nancy Wood (Ray) of Eagle, Idaho; Gail Wilcock (Roy) of Enoch, Utah; Janis Jones (Rudy) of Riverdale, Utah; Donna Hulet (the late Robert Hulet) of Enoch, Utah, Charles Wayne Twitchell (Maria) of Enterprise, Utah; and Steven Adams Twitchell (Clairene) of Enterprise, Utah; his son-in-law Robert Holt of Enterprise, Utah.

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Twitchell; daughter, JoAnn Holt; his granddaughters JoLynn Holt and Shantell Marie Wood; two sons-in-law: Lee Grygla and Robert Hulet; his parents and his four brothers: Bert, Carl, Grant, and Ted.
