Ruth Annie Mae Hawkes Corry Graf

March 18, 1931 – October 10, 2019

Ruth Annie Mae Hawkes Corry Graf slipped peacefully into eternity on the afternoon of Thursday, October 10, 2019 at home at the SunRiver Retreat. Ruth, the only child of Robert T. and Mae Stray Hawkes, was born on March 18, 1931 in Salt Lake City.

The petite little blond was a spirited child and a spunky teenager who would become Valedictorian of West High School’s class of 1948. As an adult she was known as a determined, organized, hardworking and no-nonsense woman.

Prior to graduation, her father told his “big city girl” she would need to get a fulltime job to take care of herself. Ruth responded she would get a job but only part time because she intended to go to college. She kept this important promise to herself, working her way through a few semesters at the University of Utah before leaving school to marry Alan Corry on March 21, 1961. They had one child, Suzanne Corry, born August 3, 1952 in Ridgecrest, CA. Ruth’s marriage did not last. The recent divorcee then finished her education at Cal State Northridge graduating in 1965 with a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts.

With school behind her, she took an entry level job in the Los Angeles County Welfare Department and over the next 30 years, she worked her way into management where, among a myriad of other duties and responsibilities, she interpreted welfare rules from Sacramento. She retired in 1991.

Her daughter Suzanne married Dean Chapman on December 11, 1971. They had one child, Amber Chapman, born on July 25, 1975 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Unfortunately, her marriage did not last and to help her daughter Ruth took Amber into her home for many years.

Ruth met Richard (“Dick”) Dale Graf, the man who would become her husband, at church. Her ward boundaries had changed, requiring her to attend a different ward. “I’ll go to the new ward, Lord, if you’ll put a man there for me!” At the same time, her future companion had made the decision to give up his wild Hollywood life, including high stakes poker, after he was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1971. The handsome young actor with his rich, deep movie star voice, had a few women who found him beguiling, but Ruth was the one who captured his heart. She was cautioned not to marry a risky, ex-actor/gambler, but she prevailed. They were married on May 27, 1972 and were sealed in the Los Angeles Temple as soon as time permitted. At the time of her passing they had celebrated almost 47 ½ years together.

About a year after their nuptials, Dick had not yet found steady work. Her patience wearing thin, Ruth told him, “get a job or it’s ‘goodbye, Buster’.” Through Ruth’s references and persistence, he successfully passed the entry exam and was assigned the Juvenile Welfare Department in Pasadena. Later he transferred to a better position as a courtroom clerk in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. He ultimately worked 20 years, having successfully moved into management. The last 8 years of his working life, he managed 13 Family Law courtrooms in downtown Los Angeles.

The first 30 years of their marriage they resided in Tarzana, California. They moved to St. George, Utah in September 2001. Dick and Ruth were well known both in Tarzana and in St. George for their hobby of collecting and displaying Christmas Village houses. They would spend three days setting up their collection around Halloween and take it down in February. During the holiday season they would invite neighborhood friends and ward members over to see the displays and enjoy holiday treats. Ruth always said they bought their beautiful home in St. George because it had two basement storage room big enough to hold their entire collection.

For one year, Ruth was President of “Village Addicts Anonymous,” a 200-member Christmas village collectors club. VAA was recognized countrywide as the largest membership club in the United States. Every large city has at least one such club. VAA met once a month, to trade, buy and sell duplicate or unwanted houses. They had a lot of fun together! Dick composed a song for the VAA club, entitled… you guessed it… “Village Addicts Anonymous.”

With their closest friends John and Caroline Matthews, their travels took them to Alaska, New Zealand and Australia, Italy, Germany, England, Wales, and other scenic locations, including Mexico. Ruth even organized a month-long trip to China for 15 of her closest friends, including the Matthews!

Ruth and Dick enjoyed spending time each year at their four Marriott timeshares. They owned and used annually for 25 years their two weeks in Maui, Hawaii (their favorite), two weeks at Newport Beach, California; two weeks at Palm Desert (near Palm Springs) and one week at Park City, Utah.

Ruth especially loved frequent trips to the Danish-style community of Solvang and visiting art galleries in Carmel, California. She looked forward to frequent visits to a mountain top outside of Los Angeles where they owned 1/5th of a share of a mountain cabin. Other loves in her life were two favorite mixed breed dogs, Ebenezer (also known as Bennie) and Fanny.

Ruth painted and enjoyed collecting artwork, playing card and board games with friends and family, and attending concerts at the Hollywood Bowl. Together they could regularly be seen in the audience at the Glendale Center Theater where they had season tickets.

Ruth loved music. As a young woman she studied the violin and played in the Salt Lake Tabernacle. In California, she served as Relief Society president in the Reseda Ward. As a member of the Bloomington 7th Ward, Ruth became well known for her organizational skills, particularly as the ward choir director. Before every rehearsal and performance, she would call to remind each choir member and took meticulous care of the choir’s music library. Because of her dedication, she had a very large choir.

Ruth leaves behind her husband Dick Graf; daughter Suzanne Corry Chapman of Canoga Park, CA; her granddaughter Amber Gwinn of Federal Way, WA; Dick’s son Dana Graf of Fort Collins, CO; Ruth’s half-brother Robert Hawkes of St. George, UT; niece Donna Phillips of Salt Lake City and nephew Stan Poulton of Placentia, CA; and nieces Janet Deveraux of Payson, UT; Sharon Grix of Sandy, UT; Winnie Stark of Modesto, CA, daughter of Ruth’s half-sister (deceased); and about a dozen first cousins in England.

Special thanks to the kind and accommodating staff at the SunRiver Retreat for making the last few months of Ruth’s life enjoyable with fun and interesting activities, good food and new friends. Dick wants to also express gratitude to Ruth’s devoted ministering sister and loving friend Paula Bown of Bloomington.

Funeral services will be held, Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 S. Bluff Street. Visitation is from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. The funeral begins at 11 a.m. followed by lunch and a family gathering in Spilsbury’s lower gallery. Ruth will be laid to rest on Monday, October 28 in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.

August 12, 1987 – October 22, 2019

Jason Bud Branham, 32, passed away in St. George, Utah on Oct. 22, 2019, at home with his parents at his bedside. His passing was the result of a 14-month battle with Glioma Brain Cancer. He was born on Aug. 12, 1987 in St. George, Utah to Bud and Ellen Branham. In sixth grade, his family moved to Riverside, Iowa, where he graduated from Highland High School.

At 6’4”, Jason was tall, lanky, agile and strong. He could climb anything and was always up for a challenge. He was passionate about bull riding and rode his first steer at 2-years-old and last bull shortly before his diagnosis. Despite his height, he was a successful bull rider, competing and winning throughout the Midwest.

Jason worked construction and particularly enjoyed framing for both home and commercial properties. He loved all food and was never a picky eater, often creating food combinations from leftovers that made his family cringe. He loved hunting with his dad, playing video games, wearing crazy socks and listening to classic rock, old country and rap music. He was an amazing uncle and loved being around his nieces and nephews.

Jason is loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed. Despite the many challenges his diagnosis presented over the past year, he handled them with grace and zero complaints.

He is survived by his parents, Bud and Ellen Branham of St. George, Utah; sisters Tina Tubbs (Blake) of Fruitland, Idaho, Jessie Price (Robert) of Bountiful, Utah and Kristi Dawn Brokaw (Nate) of Grimes, Iowa; nieces and nephews Gunner Hardy, Nyah Tubbs, KaBella Price, Treyson Tubbs, Ruger Price, Citori Price, Brecken Tubbs, Junuh Brokaw and Penley Brokaw; grandparents Garn and Dorothy Huntington of St. George, Utah and Dean Branham of Glade Park, Colorado; as well as other aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and loved ones throughout the United States. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Bessie Branham.

Ride a bull cowboy,

Put a leg on each side,

Keep your mind in the middle,

Don’t look at the ground,

When the eight-second buzzer rings,

This cowboy will get his wings.

Love, Mom

George Hamilton Watson

Sept. 20, 1935 – Oct. 29, 2019

Heaven was blessed with a true Irish gentleman on Oct. 29, 2019, when George Hamilton Watson passed away peacefully from the effects of Parkinson’s disease, surrounded by his “Girls”—wife Chloë and daughters Sharon, Ruth, and Miriam.

George was born on Sept. 20, 1935, in Dublin, Ireland to George Hugh Watson and Gladys Elizabeth Hamilton. As a child growing up in Ireland, he loved scouting, cricket, rugby, and seaside holidays with his mum, dad, and big sister Eva. Following his graduation from The High School, Dublin, George studied Geotechnical Engineering at Trinity College where he earned his PhD in 1962 and later an honorary Doctor of Science in 1981.

In 1954, George won a blind date with Chloë in a card game—and apparently their date went well! Their girls loved to hear how he cycled ten miles one way each Sunday to visit her. They were married six years later and would have celebrated their 60th anniversary next year. George and Chloë moved to St George four years ago, after having previously resided in Stockton-on-Tees, England; Winnipeg and Calgary, Canada; and Naperville, IL—their home for 41 years.

A million miler on two different airlines, George travelled throughout the world during his career. From designing natural gas pipelines in Asia and the Middle East, to building structures on permafrost in Siberia, to constructing ice islands for oil exploration in the Arctic, George enjoyed working with others and putting his engineering knowledge to use. He could build you a hydroelectric dam, but couldn’t hammer a nail in straight! George retired in 1998 after 24 years with Amoco/BP.

One of his greatest joys was working together with Chloë in LDS temples. They served as President and Matron of the Chicago Temple (2000-2004) and later as missionaries in the London, England Temple—the same temple where they had been sealed in 1961. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints since 1959, George shared his testimony of the Savior not only through his words but also in the way he lived his life.

George was a living example of his mantra, “People matter, things don’t.” His wisdom, compassion and humor were evident to all who knew him. He touched the lives of countless people around the world and will be missed greatly.

George is survived by his wife, Chloë Kilroy Watson; his three daughters, Sharon (James) Maughan of Burnt Hills NY, Ruth (Lance) Hill of Kaysville UT, Miriam (David) Cole of Farmington UT; 10 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and his nephew, Gordon (Faye) Oliver of Newbury, England.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m. at the Valley View Chapel, 820 North Valley View Drive, St. George. Visitations will be held Friday, Nov. 1, from 5-7 p.m. at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Boulevard, St. George, Utah, and prior to service from 12-1:30 p.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, you are invited to contribute to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ General Missionary Fund.

Oct. 27, 1951 – Oct. 30, 2019

Darlene Joyce Verrillo, our amazing, beautiful, loving wife, mother, grand and great grandmother finally won her 12 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease on Wednesday Oct. 30, 2019, in St. George, Utah.

Darlene was born on Oct. 27, 1951 to Ralph and June Coon in Bridgeport, CT. She graduated from Notre Dame Girls High School in 1969. She then attended one year of college but decided that nursing would be her calling. She graduated in 1973 from the the St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing and helped many people with her nursing skills for 31 years.

In 1969 she accepted an invitation to a junior prom from her future husband Mark and they never looked back. Darlene and Mark married in Bridgeport, CT in 1973 and were married for 46 years. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, they were sealed for time and all eternity with their children in 1981 in the Washington D.C. temple.

After Mark retired, they moved to St. George, Utah where Darlene tolerated the heat but fell in love with her new neighbors and friends. She will be remembered for the love she gave to all she knew, her infectious laugh and her sense of humor. She was most proud of her four daughters, fourteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, always thinking of them before herself.

She truly endured to the end, never once complaining of the debilitating disease she endured for years. She was an active member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and sang with the Green Valley third ward choir until she was no longer able.

She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Ralph and June Coon and niece Jennifer Bike. She is survived by her husband, Mark, daughters Melissa Roberts (Shawn), Jaime Curren (Zachariah), Tracy Pollock (Brent), Lauren Hunt (Brandon), her sister, Debbie Bike and niece Melanie Bike.

Robert Dean Pead

Jan. 8, 1930 – Oct. 27, 2019

The best father ever, Robert Dean Pead, age 89, quietly passed away on Oct. 27, 2019. While surrounded by his children in pleasant conversation, he decided to sneak off to the joyous family reunion planned, just beyond the veil.

Robert was born on Jan. 8, 1930 to Frederick Budd Pead and Henrietta Harmon in Fairview, Wyoming. He soon, thereafter, became an orphan boy, when his mother died in 1932 and his father in 1935. He was very much loved by his older siblings: Budd, Loreen, Ballard, Marie, Elaine, and Raymond and was loved by his younger sister, Cleoetta.

Dad and his brother, Ray were always close. From the stories we have heard, from both of them, these two boys were most mischievous, causing consternation to their older siblings and Mrs. Nebeker, who was tasked with keeping track of them. While growing up they accomplished many things; like running away from home, tipping outhouses, helping on the dry farm, starting the furnace each day at the schoolhouse and milking cows. He also said that there were many other things they accomplished that perhaps we didn’t need to know about.

Dad graduated from Star Valley High in May, 1948, and graduated from Seminary in the same year. He served a mission in the Central States Mission from November 1950 to 1952. His also served his country in the Korean conflict, during 1954 and 1955. He served in the U. S. Army Medical Corp, being stationed in both Alaska and San Francisco.

Robert married Neva Lloyd on June 13, 1957, in the Logan LDS Temple. Mom and Dad lived in Reseda, California. Dad worked for Savon Drug in retail. Rob and Allison were both born in Hollywood, California. In 1960, the family moved to Providence, Utah, where Naunie was born. While in Providence, Dad worked for Thiokol Industries and sold Watkins products, and picked up odd jobs to feed his little family. Dad graduated from Institute of Religion in May of 1966 and received a Special Certificate of Achievement for meritorious service. He graduated from Utah State University in June 1967 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

After Dad decided to teach Seminary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1967, he was assigned to Tropic, Utah and the family moved from Cache Valley. Curtis was born in Panguitch while the family lived in Tropic.

Dad loved to teach about the gospel and he was truly learned in the scriptures. He had a deep and abiding testimony of his Savior and shared it with many students over the years. He especially loved to teach his special education students. In 1970, Dad was transferred to St. George with the Seminaries. His family grew in St. George, where both Dallas and Darren were born. Robert retired from Seminaries and Institutes in 1987. He then made his side job of Masonry a full-time trade for another 15 years. He contributed once again to his community by creating many brick and block edifices for his neighbors and friends. He was 72 when he retired. He then enjoyed watching the Colorado Rockies, BYU Sports, and the Utah Jazz for many years. He lamented growing older and thought those extra twenty years he got for good clean living were not so golden. He taught us much about enduring gracefully to the end. We will miss you, our Dad, protector, and friend. Until we meet again. We love you Daddy.

Robert is survived by his children: Lisa Leavitt Pead (Rob’s wife), Allison Pead McCoy, Naunie Pead, Curtis Dean (Greisby) Pead, Dallas Kent Pead, Darren Scott (Mellody) Pead. grandchildren: Kason Robert Pead, Kira Huggins, Nicole Pead, Maddy Evans, Klint Pead (Rob’s children), Austin McCoy (Allison’s son), Dallin Travis Pead, Jarrett Dean Pead (Curtis’ sons ) Iris Pead (Dallas’ daughter), Bowen Scott Pead, Shaylee Ann Pead, Ashley Neva Pead, Brelynn Mae Pead, and John Robert Pead (Darren’s children). He was preceded in death by his wife, Neva Lloyd Pead; son, Robert Earl Pead and all of his siblings: George Budd Pead, Loreen Allred, Marie Call, Ballard Pead, Elaine Borrowman, Raymond Pead, and Cleoetta Hyde. After his brother Raymond died, he was saddened to be left behind and by the need to be the last one standing.

Funeral Service will be held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at the St. George 9th Ward Chapel, 550 East 700 South, St. George, Utah. Visitations will be held Friday, November 8, 2019 at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 West St. George Blvd, St. George, Utah, and prior to service from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will be at the Tonaquint Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. November 2, 1935 — November 1, 2019

LaVon Petersen (Eunice LaVon Ingram) passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 1, 2019, on the eve of her 84th birthday after years of decline due to Alzheimer’s disease.

She was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah, on Saturday, Nov. 2, 1935, to Aaron Wood Ingram and Marion Eunice Kooyman Ingram. Her sisters were Myrna Holmstead and Naomia (Robert) Rogers. The baby of the family was Jewett (Esther) Ingram.

The family lived mostly in American Fork, near their cousins, aunts and uncles, but for LaVon’s last year of high school, they moved to Dexter, Oregon for her dad’s job. She graduated from Pleasant Hill Union High School in Oregon.

LaVon married Eugene LaVor Gardner (later divorced) on June 20, 1956. They raised five children: Elaine, TeriLyn, Kelly, Kyle and Aaron.

She married Earl Petersen on Aug. 8, 1986, and gained five adult stepchildren and many additional grandchildren. She and Earl made their home in Provo and later retired to Gunlock, Utah.

LaVon was an avid homemaker, sewing nearly all of her children’s clothes, including their underwear, and canning everything from potatoes to peaches, including an experiment with zucchini that was supposed to pass for pineapple. Her chili sauce, molded cheese salad and peach cobbler were legendary.

She crocheted huge ruffled tablecloths, starched them so the ruffles would stand up 6 inches high, and gave them as gifts. She was most widely known after her retirement for her quilts which she worked on regularly and gave away just as often. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a good neighbor and friend, readily helping whenever she noticed a need.

When she became senile (her word) she went to live with family and created an elaborate story about being kidnapped by her children banging on the door at 6 o’clock in the morning. For the last 6 or more years, the slow progress of Alzheimer’s has taken over her mind and body.

LaVon was preceded in death by her parents, Aaron and Eunice Ingram; husband, Earl Petersen; former husband, Eugene Gardner; grandson, Kelly Losee; brothers-in-law Don Holmstead and Robert Rogers; son-in-law, Steven Lavar Fausett; and grandson, Ryan Steven Fausett.

She is survived by her siblings Myrna Holmstead, Naomia Rogers, and Jewett (Esther) Ingram; children Elaine (Todd) Losee, TeriLyn (Scotty) Fuller, Kyle (Cindy) Gardner, Kelly (Tom) Mullenix, and Aaron (Julie) Gardner; step-children Randa Lee (Frank) Garrett, Cathy (“Bud”) Gardner, Kent (Shelley) Petersen, Calvin (Shauna) Petersen, and Teresa (Robbie) Carter; 42 grandchildren and 62 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Friday, Nov. 8, 2019 at 2 pm at Metcalf Mortuary, 288 W. St. George Blvd., St George, Utah. A visitation will be held prior to services from noon to 1:30 pm. at the mortuary. Interment will be in the Gunlock Cemetery.

The family wishes to express gratitude to the wonderful ward in Gunlock who looked out for her before her kidnapping, Beehive Homes in Perry for their care the last nine months, and to Brio Hospice for their compassion and support when the end came near.
