March 23, 1940 — March 24, 2020

Heaven has gained a special angel. Beverly Ann Abbott Bowler passed away peacefully at her home on March 24, 2020, an hour and a half after her 80th Birthday. She was born March 23, 1940, to Stephen Oscar and Mary Hughes Abbott in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was the youngest of seven children.

From birth, she faced several challenges as she was born blind in one eye, but she did not let that slow her down. Beverly spent her childhood growing up in Mesquite, Nevada. At the young age of 15, her biggest challenge came. She was in a horrific car accident and was not expected to survive. She had a strong will to live and she pulled through but was told she would never be able to walk again. She rose above and proved them wrong once again. They said, “but you will never be able to have children.”

Beverly met the love of her life, Richard Kay Bowler from Veyo, Utah, and they were later married on Feb. 23, 1957. She and Kay had a love for each other that was unmeasurable.

They soon moved to Fort Benning, Georgia in 1958 when Kay was drafted into the Army. In 1959, she proved them wrong once again when she gave birth to their first child, Ila Kay. They moved back to Veyo to live in 1960 and had their second child, Kevin Richard in 1965.

Beverly’s passion was her family and together they spent many weekends camping, arrowhead hunting, many summer vacations and her favorite was getting ready for the deer hunt where many close friends and family would come from close and afar to gather at their camp. She loved taking pictures and you never seen Beverly without a camera in her hand, which has left us with many priceless memories. She had a love for dachshund dogs, and you could always find one by her side.

Beverly was a very kind, caring soul and had a huge heart. She made friends everywhere she went and loved being a social butterfly. She never forgot a birthday and loved sending cards to anyone she knew that was going through a tough time to just needed a pick me up. She would always find the good in a bad situation.

Beverly was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2007 she was sealed in the St. George Temple which made her proud.

Beverly worked at Sun Capital Bank for several years and The Washington County School Lunch program along with many other jobs.

In 2015, the love of her life, Kay, was called home which broke her heart, but again she pulled herself up and carried on for five more lonely years. They have now been reunited and are together again.

She is survived by her daughter, Ila Kay (Keith) Burgess; son, Kevin (Leslie) Bowler; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Golda Abbott Hicken. She is preceded in death by her husband, Kay Bowler; parents, Oscar and Mary Abbott; brother, Stephen Abbott; sister, Ila Abbott; brother, Otis Abbott; brother, Gerald Abbott; and sister, Mazie Abbott Atchison.

Over time, the wreck took a toll on Beverly’s body and she needed a caregiver. The family is deeply grateful to Dianne Stuehser and others for their years of loving care.

Funeral serviced will be not be held at this time. There will be a private family graveside on Saturday, March 28, 2020, at the Veyo City Cemetery.

Shirley Ione Raasch Anderson, age 78, passed away on March 29, 2020. She was born on Feb. 6, 1942, in Bridgewater, Iowa, to Hazel Irene Follman Raasch and Elmer John Raasch, the youngest of their four children.

Shirley was raised in Brigdewater, Iowa and after graduation from Bridgewater-Fontanelle High School moved to Chicago, Illinois to work as an airline reservationist. It was in Chicago that she met Michiel M. Anderson on her 20th birthday. She married Mike on June 8, 1963, in Provo, Utah and they were sealed for time and eternity June 6, 1964, in the Manti, Utah temple.

Shirley and Mike spent their early married years growing their family in Provo, Utah and then in Shelley and Terreton, Idaho areas. After an additional summer school semester at BYU, they moved their growing family to Conway, Arkansas for three years, and then to Springfield, Missouri, for nearly 20 years. It was in Springfield that they had their final seven children to bring their total to 13: 10 boys and three girls. After years of serving in various capacities as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Shirley was able to serve two full-time missions with her husband Mike; first in the New Hampshire, Manchester Mission from January 2008 to January 2009 and then in the New Jersey, Morristown Mission from January 2011 to August 2012.

They also enjoyed serving together as ordinance workers in the temple, both on their mission and in St. George. As a convert to the gospel in 1962, Shirley loved to share her light and testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, with all who were willing to listen. And she shared her love with everyone she met. Her love and infectious smile she shared freely and without judgment to all she came into contact with. She was the epitome of love and kindness and made every person she met feel like the most important person in the room.

Our beloved Helen Jolley Smith, 86, passed away on March 30, 2020, at her home in St. George, Utah. She showed great courage and gracefully dealt with a declining illness. She was born July 19, 1933, in Provo, Utah to Earl and Edith Jolley and was raised in the beautiful town of Tropic, Utah. Her love of the Bryce Valley area and the people were evident throughout her life. She attended BYU and obtained a degree in elementary education in 1954.

During her BYU days, she developed a wonderful friendship with a fellow Bryce Valley native, Dar Smith. Helen and Dar were married in the St. George Temple on Sept. 17, 1954, and were married for 65 wonderful years.

Helen began teaching at Spanish Fork then in Bryce Valley where they began their family. Helen and Dar both shared a great love for St. George. In 1967 they made St. George their new home where they remained for 53 years and raised their family.

Helen filled her life with service to her family, her community and her church. She was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in numerous church callings over the years and especially loved working with the youth and other women in her ward. She was able to serve a full-time mission in 1998 with her favorite companion, Dar, in Wellington, New Zealand, where they developed lifelong friendships and dearly loved the people they worked with and served. Helen and Dar also served in several local church service callings including the Deseret Industries, Member Location Mission, and the St. George Temple.

Like her mother, Helen loved to read and could always be found reading by herself or to one of her children or grandchildren. She loved to travel, especially to see family and friends. She loved being with her family, especially if it involved camping and family vacations.

Her doors were always open, and her grandchildren held a special place in her heart; several of whom, lived with her and grandpa while attending college or other times in their lives. They knew of her love for them and they also provided special support for her in her senior years. She dearly loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends and neighbors. Her home had a special spirit within and was constantly filled with family and friends who loved to visit and spend time with her.

Helen is survived by her husband, Dar L. Smith, sons: Lary (Shauna), Dar (Crystal), Tim (Jennifer), Lans (Stacy), daughter, Kristin, and brother, Henry (La Verne) Jolley

She is preceded in death by her parents: Earl Rappleye Jolley, and Eliza Edith Brown Jolley, and sons: David and Gary.

The family would like to thank Michelle and Hilda of Zion’s Way Hospice for their loving care of our Mother.

There will be a family graveside service in Henrieville, Utah. A memorial service will be announced, at a later date, and will be held in St. George, Utah.

March 31, 2020

Boyd Winder, who passed away on March 31, 2020, does not do obituaries. He does not do funerals. So, in lieu, his children would like to share what our family will reminisce about Dad around the campfire for the rest of our lives.

We called him Dad, Pops, and Grandpa. We loved him, we talked back to him, we laughed with him, we hunted and cooked with him, we pulled pranks against him, and we ate crow many times when he got the drop on us.

Boyd had many friends growing up in Springdale, Utah. He was raised by Floyd Enos Winder and Ramona Firm with three sisters and two brothers. This is where he pulled a lot of pranks, did some stupid things, got yelled at, and ran from a lot of people chasing him. He was a Hurricane High School Graduate where being left tackle in a line of great men and shop class were second to hunting and the mountains.

Dad loved to hunt, and in the offseason, he’d sit on Kolob or East Zion and think about the hunt. He was dirt poor at times, rich at times, responsible all the time, and never lazy.

Boyd loved two women in his life. Our Mom, Jill Wilkins and our bonus Mom Kristine Wayman. He was very proud of his four children and 13 grandchildren and talked about them often. We drove him crazy, made his hair turn grey, and in the end … became just like him. He once said his children turned out better than he ever was or imagined they would be.

Taught by his father, Boyd excelled at the chemistry of food and vocally admitted he would never be as good as his Dad. This tradition of the father continues for his children. Despite Dad’s teachings, we question if we will ever be as good in the kitchen as our Dad and not being able to ask cooking advice over a hard dish will remain a void for the rest of our lives. His homemade bread and pies, the Saturday Navajo taco specials, hot chicken noodle soup, and prime rib were just a few of his talents that are fondly remembered by his loyal customers. Boyd extended that talent to dutch oven campfire dinners on different game hunts, family campouts, and catered events. If Boyd was in the kitchen, you knew it was a good meal.

Aside from his first Moose hunt with his son this year, Boyd did just about everything he ever wanted to do in his life. He experienced the joys of a family, cooed his grandkids to sleep on his chest, gave jobs, money, and guns to people around him, mastered the dutch oven, watched the Alaskan wildlife from his cabin porch, and taught his son to hunt.

Due to the virus apocalypse, we are unable to have services at this time but will gather for some good food, laughter, and share lots of Boyd memories the first chance we get.

Thank you to everyone who has shown love and compassion to Boyd Winder, Kristine Wayman and their children. It’s incredibly overwhelming to see how many lives have been affected by Boyd’s presence.
