Justin Richard Maples

MaplesJustinOctober 24, 1980 – January 13, 2016

Justin Richard Maples passed away Jan. 13, 2016, of injuries sustained in an auto-pedestrian accident near Veyo, Utah. He was born in Logan, Utah, Oct. 24, 1980, to Janice Bergsjo Maples and James Leonard Maples.

Justin’s greatest achievement, in which he took great pride, was his son Braxten James Maples. He wanted to provide him with every possible opportunity and made many sacrifices and attempts to change his life to benefit Braxten. He felt it was his responsibility to protect him from harm and provide a safe environment in which his son could grow up to achieve the goals and dreams he was never quite able to achieve.

Justin suffered from certain deficiencies that were not readily apparent to others, not even to his family. Complications during birth resulted in over four minutes without oxygen resulting in alpha, beta and theta brain waves to be almost constantly “disregulated.”

This undoubtedly caused him to make decisions that often did not make sense to others, given how intelligent he actually was. This only became apparent when a “Brain Map” was recently conducted. Such internal turmoil undoubtedly caused him great internal pain, resulting in self-medication of one sort or another.

Justin had made many friends throughout his life. He was kindhearted, seeking to help others who were down on their luck or being treated poorly. As example at 10 years old, he insisted his mother take him to a viewing of a soccer teammate’s mother, who had committed suicide. All this to make sure his friend was OK.

More than once (actually a lot of times) he gave money to friends, which left him without personal funds. He especially could not stand to see animals mistreated. Justin had a strong sense of fairness. What you saw is what you got with Justin, and he never apologized for being himself.

Justin’s smile and good nature are missed by many friends and acquaintances, both young and old, who say that his presence would light up the room.

He is sorely missed by his parents, who never stopped loving him, and never will. We believe he has been taken home to that person who will now provide a place for him where he can now seek to achieve his full potential without the constraints that were placed on him in this life.

Justin is survived by his son, Braxten Maples, St George, Utah; his sister, Heidi (Chris) Gounaris, Salt Lake City, Utah; his brother, Jonathan (Yoshimi) Maples, Salt Lake City, Utah; and his parents of St George, Utah.

Funeral services

  • Cremation provided by Metcalf Mortuary, with special thanks to Dan Ernstrom.
  • A memorial service as a celebration of life will be held at a later date, yet to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an account in Braxten’s name, which is set up at State Bank of Southern Utah or to the Children’s Learning Center in the name of Justin and Braxten.

Arrangements entrusted to the care of Metcalf Mortuary, (435) 673-4221. Please visit their website for condolences, complete obituary and funeral listings.

March 12, 1964 – January 16, 2016

On Jan. 16, 2016, the world as so many knew it was changed forever. Trent Brewer succumbed to the evil disease cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends. Through this unfortunate event, he was able to be reunited with his loving son.

Trent was born March 12, 1964, in Price, Utah. He is the son of H. Doyle Brewer and Shirley Austin Laws. He was an easy child to raise and for that he was truly appreciated and loved by his parents, step-mother and step-father.

Trent was a man larger than life; there was always an adventure to be had and never a dull moment. Any child would have been proud to have him as a father, and his children were honored and fortunate to call him their dad. He got the grand title of papa with his beautiful granddaughters, aka Little Monsters.

Solid as a rock, he never faltered to be there for his little sister. He truly was the best brother-in-law and by far the coolest uncle; he couldn’t be beat. His favorite adventures in life were scuba diving and exploring beaches on any warm ocean island. His friendships were as true and loyal as any could be; they were the extended family he loved.

In the short time he spent with his loving wife, they had more adventures and shared a love that most people will take a lifetime to fulfill. He was the most caring, loving, unselfish, devoted husband Lisa could ever wish for, and he will be forever loved and missed.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa; loving daughter, Allison (Andrew) Reese; three added daughters, Shami, Myndi and Kelsi; 16 grandchildren; sister, Robbin (Charles) Cochran; step-sisters, Brenda (Rick) Lambert and Jennifer Adams Hulse; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Tyler; his father, Doyle; and other family members.

Funeral services

  • Per his wishes, there will be no services of any kind.

Family and friends are invited to share condolences online.

Robert James Hildebrand

HildebrandRobert ObitNovember 5, 1918 – January 9, 2016

Dr. Robert James “Dr. Bob” Hildebrand, D.D.S., passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, at his residence at the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home in Ivins, Utah. He was 97 years old.

Bob was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Dr. Gustav J. Hildebrand, M.D., and Josephine Annette Phalen, both of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, while Gustav was serving a brief military assignment in Salt Lake City.

Shortly after Bob’s birth, the family returned to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where Bob, his brother, Dr. James Fredrick Hikdebrand, M.D. (deceased), and sister, Lois Annette Hikdebrand, R.N. (deceased), enjoyed a happy upbringing.

Bob graduated from Sheboygan Central High in 1936, attended Pre-Med school at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin, and transferred in 1938 to the Marquette University School of Dentistry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, completing his dental degree in 1942. (Bob was the last of his dental school classmates to pass away.)

In 1942, Bob received a prestigious fellowship at the University of Rochester, New York, by invitation of renowned physiology professor, Dr. Harold Hodge, PhD, at the University of Rochester Medical School Department of Physiology and Chemistry.

Bob researched the dental effects of Fluoride and was the key proponent and inspiration to his father, Dr. Gus, who at the time was the Sheboygan City health commissioner, to appeal to then-Mayor Dr. Willard Sonnenberg to be the very first to introduce fluoridation into the community water supply to help quel the tooth decay that plagued humankind. That was sucessfully done in 1942, a now-historical event.

Immediately after completing that process, Bob walked into a military recruitment office in Rochester, New York, signed up and spent the night traveling by train to his first assignment as a dentist for the U.S. Army Air Corp. He served at state-side Military Air Bases working 24/7 shifts with little food or sleep to ensure every Airman deployed wouldn’t suffer toothaches in the field.

Bob and fellow Air Corp dentists also spent 24/7 shifts identifying the remains of thousands of dead before returning them to the correct families for burial, for which they felt a strongly reverent sense of responsibility.

Though released from duty in 1947 as a major, Bob was known as “Captain Hildebrand” and “Dr. Bob” throughout his service. Bob had also done WWII dental work for many war-time journalists and soldiers with post-WWII connections to Hollywood and was surprised and flattered to find himself characterized nearly 40 years later in two episodes of the popular 1980s TV show “M.A.S.H.” – as per “Nurse Hoolihan’s description of the tall, handsome and gentlemanly visiting military dentist “Dr. Bob”/ “Captain Hildebrand” (though he had not served in the Korean War).

Bob married his civilian dental assistant and precious life companion, Barbara Mae Josephson, April 30, 1945, in the Las Vegas Army Air Corps Base Chapel. Barbara was the daughter of Ephraim L. Josephson and Thelma A. Madsen of Las Vegas, Nevada.

After WWII, Bob and Barbara moved to his beloved Sheboygan, Wisconsin, where Bob was a well-known dentist, artist, outdoors enthusiast and humanitarian, serving family, friends and community in various service-oriented capacities.

Bob and Barbara raised their four children, J.R., Gary, Mark and Joyce, in Sheboygan and valued every minute there for 52 years with many loved ones and treasured friendships before moving to be closer to family in Redmont, Oregon, in 1998. In 2007, Bob and Barbara joined Joyce in moving to a favorite family vacation area in the “High Desert” sunshine of St. George, Utah, where Barbara’s sister, Dorothy Taylor, and family had been residents for many years.

Bob and Barbara enjoyed every multiseasonal outdoor activity together and with their family, many friends and loved ones. Ice skating skiing, golfing, hiking, picnicking, swimming at the local beaches and camping all across the country were favorite family activities until Bob turned 80 and decided, “just daily hiking easy trails had to be enough.”

Every family excursion included “sing-alongs” of favorite songs around the campfires and in the car; right up to Bob and Joyce’s last drive four days before his passing. Bob loved to sing!

Bob was a self-taught artist and well known throughout the Wisconsin Art community. His dental patients enjoyed the display of oil paintings of Wisconsin landscapes that Barbara kept in constant seasonal rotation on the walls of Bob’s spacious dental office. Bob had continued his oil painting artistry at the Veteran’s Home right up to his last week.

Bob believed in “The Golden Rule” and genuinely lived it with integrity each day of his 97 years, with a cheerful countenance, kind gentlemanly demeanor and sweetly generous heart. It is Bob’s wonderful legacy that his kind presence has been the “light” and “delight” of any room he entered all the days of his life.

He will be greatly missed by the four children, 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, on whom he cast that bright and beautiful light.

Bob’s last year, and last days, were surrounded by many friendships among the residents and amazingly wonderful staff at the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home, whom he thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. Of course, Bob also really enjoyed the weekly “sing-alongs” at Southern Utah Veterans’s Home.

Funeral services

  • In lieu of a service, Bob requested that one of his most recent paintings of a flying American Bald Eagle be presented to the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home during one of his favorite “sing-alongs” there.
  • A Flag Presentation ceremony, presentation of the painting and sing-along will be scheduled in Bob’s honor on Monday, Jan. 25, 1:30 p.m.,in the large multipurpose room in the Southern Utah Veteran’s Home, 160 N. 200 East, Ivins, Utah.

Many Thanks to Southern Utah Veterans’s Administration, Journey of Hope Hospice, Metcalf Mortuary and the Local Chapters of the American Legion.

J Kent Giles 1October 26, 1920 – February 2, 2016

Joseph Kent Giles, age 95, a 10-year resident of St. George, Utah, passed away February 2, 2016 in the arms of his sweetheart, Joyce, while surrounded by loving family members.

Kent was born October 26, 1920 in Heber City, Utah, the ninth of twelve children born to Thomas Monroe and Martha Rachel Buys Giles.

Kent grew up on his parents’ homestead on both sides of the upper Duchesne River at Stockmore which later became Hanna, Utah.  His family farmed and raised cattle and sheep in that beautiful valley.

A great grandson of early Mormon pioneers, he treasured his heritage and was an active member of the Sons of Utah Pioneers.  He loved all things outdoors and was an accomplished horseman and an excellent hunter and fisherman.

Kent attended his first eight years of school with the same teacher in the Hanna one-room log school house, ninth through eleventh grades in Tabiona, and twelfth grade at Pleasant Grove High School while living with his brother-in-law and sister, Lloyd and Marvel Pace.

He served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central States Mission from May 1940 to May 1942.  After his release in 1942, Kent returned to live in Pleasant Grove, Utah, and worked on the construction of the Geneva Steel Plant.  While in Pleasant Grove he met Joyce Fugal.  Their relationship flourished, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 15, 1944.  This union has produced a posterity numbering 211.  Soon afterwards they moved to Logan, Utah where Kent studied forestry and range management at the Utah State Agricultural College, now Utah State University.

He finished his studies in 1948 and embarked on a very successful career with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) for 38 years, 1948 – 1986.  He started out as assistant range manager and then worked in several other capacities over a four-year period, including field examiner, range conservationist, range manager, and assistant district manager.  In 1952 Kent was promoted to District Manager, and during the next 20 years he served as District Manager of three large districts: Murray, Utah 1952-1961, Burns, Oregon 1961-1966, and Elko, Nevada 1966-1972.

From 1972-1975 Kent worked as a natural resource specialist on the BLM staff in Washington, DC.  He finished his career as Associate District Manager in Cedar City, Utah 1975-1986.

His work philosophy was to do a good job in whatever the job was, have a good attitude, enjoy the work and things will work out well.  He excelled in every job he did, and he thoroughly enjoyed his career with the BLM.

Kent retired in Cedar City in 1986, and he and Joyce lived there until 2006 when they moved to St. George to be closer to family.  J Kent Giles 2

Faith in Jesus Christ and service to others have always been of utmost importance to Kent.  In the church, he has served in numerous callings, including Home Teacher, Bishop, Branch President, Stake Executive Secretary, Aaronic Priesthood/Scouting Leader, and Stake Young Men President.  Together, he and Joyce served an 18-month full-time mission as directors of the Cody, Wyoming Visitor’s Center in the Montana Billings Mission 1986-1988, another 18 months at the Multi-Regional Employment Center in Cedar City, Utah 1989-1990, and 7 years as Temple Ordinance Workers in the St. George Temple 1996-2003.

He has also served voluntarily in many professional and community positions including President of the Kiwanis Club in Burns, Oregon, and President of the Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management.

Kent has always treated everyone he meets with kindness, respect, and unconditional love, and he has made many very close life-long friends.  Family has always been his highest priority, and his pure love has endeared him to all of his posterity.  He made sure that his family enjoyed a two-week camping vacation every summer, and his enthusiasm for the outdoors was contagious.

He knew the scientific and common names of nearly every plant in Utah, and he delighted in teaching his children and grandchildren about plants, animals, and all of the natural wonders that God has created.  Wherever they lived Kent maintained a beautiful yard for Joyce and their family to enjoy and was especially known for his exquisite flower gardens.

Kent was preceded in death by his parents, his 11 siblings, and one great granddaughter.  He left behind Joyce, his loving wife of 71 years; their eight children: Michael (Terry), Thomas (Lynda), Janet, Diane (Richard) Blodgett, Colleen (Gary) Shepherd, Joseph (Shauna), Neil (Sharon), and Janene (Kevin) Slaugh; along with 42 grandchildren (28 grand spouses); 120 great grandchildren (2 great grand spouses); three great-great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.
