Dec. 12, 1955 – May 18, 2018

Annette Austad English, 62, passed away May 18, 2018. Annette was born Dec. 12, 1955, in Ogden, Utah, to Grant Jacob Austad and Barbara Laverne Pickett. She married Lysle C. English in Elko, Nevada, June 7, 1977, they were later sealed in the Ogden temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Annette attended Ben Lomond High School in Ogden and later attended Weber State University. She then went on to one of the best jobs anyone could ask for, raising her children whom she loved more than anything on this earth (aside from her grandchildren who came later). The family had the opportunity to live abroad for a time while her husband was a contract aerospace engineer living in Arizona, Virginia, Arkansas and Nebraska before finally settling in Toquerville, Utah, and then later in Hurricane, Utah.

After all the kids entered school, Annette began her career with the Hurricane City Police Department as a secretary where she worked 18 years and had many friendships that she treasured and even got the opportunity to work with her daughter toward the end.

Annette loved to travel on many special trips with her husband, read and cook the many creations she found on the Food Network. She loved listening to the music of her youth and she shared that love with her children who knew all of mom’s favorite groups and songs. She enjoyed watching sports with her kids and grandkids and always found time to come pick them up and take them out for a treat or to dinner when she didn’t want to cook. She always wanted each of them to feel special. One of Annette’s biggest loves was her grandchildren and she loved to come to their sports and activities where you could hear her over the crowd cheering them on.

Annette is survived by her husband Lysle C. English, Hurricane, Utah; her children Jason (Wendy) English, Farmington, Utah, Alisa (Daniel) Curtis, Saratoga Springs, Utah, Lysle Cortney English, Hurricane, Utah, Tiffany (Kevin) Mower, Hurricane, Utah, Amy (Wesley) Sanders, Richfield, Utah; 18 grandchildren; her siblings; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.

Teresa Prota Schumacher-Greenfield

May 19, 1925 – May 20, 2018

Our sweet mother, Teresa Schumacher, passed through the veil into the arms of our heavenly Father on May 20, 2018. You can be sure of a joyous reunion with loved ones who awaited her.

Teresa was born May 19, 1925, in Napoli, Italy, to Vincenco Prota and Mary Davi. She married an American GI, Eugene John Schumacher, Aug. 12, 1945, in Naples in the Cathedral of San Genaro. In 1945, she immigrated to the United States and settled in Laramie, Wyoming. They had five children: Toni Lund, Patricia Sakaguchi, Joseph (Cyndi) Schumacher, Eugene (Nancy) Schumacher and Michael Schumacher. Eugene and Teresa were married 27 years before his death in 1971. Born Catholic, Teresa joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1973 in Laramie. She was sealed to Eugene Aug. 12, 2015, in the St. George temple.

In 1972, she met the second love of her life in Hawaii and they were together 34 years. He died in 2007. She moved to St. George, Utah, in June 1973 with her three sons where they have made their home ever since.

Teresa has devoted her life to serving others with love and devotion. She was the first of seven children so she learned to work at a very young age. After completing the required five years of elementary school, her father found her an apprenticeship with a dressmaker. At age 15 she was bringing home more money than her father.

She was always in tune with the spirit. When the first bombs dropped on Naples they hit the building where she was working. Just moments before, she felt impressed to take her young coworker and go to the bathroom in the basement. A bomb fell trapping them in the bathroom, but killing everyone else in the building. It took three days to dig them out. Another time the Germans were flying overhead and shooting into the piazza. Everyone ran toward the shelters and fell as they were shot, others fell on top of them. She and her year old sister were buried below dead bodies. Miraculously they both survived.

They managed to survive during the war thanks to the American GIs. Her mother could speak English so they were able to do laundry for them. This is where she met Eugene Schumacher. He was not her choice, but her mother’s. Her mother was raised in America but her father took them back to Sicily when she was 15. She always wanted to return and this marriage to Eugene was her way of doing it.

Coming to America had its challenges. There was the language barrier. Communicating with her husband and others. Eugene wisely got her into sales. She went from selling hosiery, to mops and brooms, custom-fitted bras and girdles, costume jewelry and much more. She could sell ice to the Eskimos! She became the first female agent for United of Omaha, passing the exam on the first try, and in the first year she was No. 1 in sales.

She also had health challenges that led her to search for answers for herself. When Eugene succumbed to colon cancer in 1971 her mission became clear.

The nutritional company she was working for sent her to Italy to work. There she also studied iridology and upon returning to St. George, joined Nature’s Sunshine Products as a distributor. She continued studying iridology under Dr. Bernard Jensen through Nature’s Sunshine. She was well known to many in St. George and worked with many people with their nutritional needs. One particular lady came to her from eastern Utah for help. Through inspiration she chose herbs that would help her. It was from that formulation that others found success and a small nutritional company from Nampa, Idaho, noticed her. Together Ron Wright and Dennis Itami, from the AIM companies, helped to make her dream of an herbal product that was reasonably priced you could scoop out became a reality.

Her journey has blessed the lives of many people in the United States and many parts of the world. Even days before her passing she was giving health advice to her many callers. She had a mission to fulfill and we believe she was spared during WWII to complete that mission. She has done it well and we affectionately call her our “Mother Teresa.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands Eugene Schumacher and Harry Greenfield; siblings Josie, Joseph, Maria Willhard and Salvatore. She is survived by her children, her siblings Carolina, Gupta and Antoniette Vulpis, 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Dola Dalton

July 20, 1928 — May 11, 2018

The world became a better place on July 20, 1928, when Dola Bringhurst Dalton was born. She was the fourth of Hazel and Leland Bringhurst’s 11 children. She idolized her “angel mother” who made growing up in Toquerville, Utah, the perfect place to be. She learned to cook, clean, sew, take care of her younger brothers and sisters, gather eggs, pick fruit, the list goes on and on.

Dola was an excellent student and loved school. She was vice president of her junior class and graduated from Hurricane High School in 1946. Some of her fondest memories came from that part of her life, but the best was yet to come.

Dola continued her education and attended Dixie College, and it was in St. George that she met the love of her life, Dranoel (Bud) Dalton. He was young and energetic, hard-working, full of life and as handsome as she was beautiful. The fact that he had a really good-looking convertible was a “bonus.”

It didn’t take too long before they were engaged. He would go to Dick’s Café every night where she worked, buy a piece of pie and leave her a generous tip. She saved every dollar and used that money to buy her wedding dress.

Bud and Dola were married in the St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Aug. 1, 1947. They built a good life together working side by side. Her husband started his own business, “Buds Plumbing,” and Dola was his bookkeeper. They ran the business out of their home, eventually passing it on to their favorite and only employee: their son Keith.

Although she accomplished many things in her life, her greatest accomplishment, her greatest joy was her family.

Dola passed away on May 11, 2018, and is survived by her three children: Keith (Norma) Dalton, Toni (Ed) Bowler and Debra Dalton; ten grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a “thank you” to the staff of Dixie Home Rehab and Hospice as well as a special thanks to Diane Barlow who helped care for her in her final weeks.

Funeral services

  • Funeral services will be held Friday, June 1, at 11 a.m. in the St. George LDS Chapel on 550 E. 700 South, St. George, Utah.
  • Visitation will take place from 9-10:30 a.m. prior to services.
  • Interment will take place in the St. George City Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 435-673-2454.

Family and friends are invited to sign her online guestbook at the Spilsbury Mortuary website.

March 19, 1928 — May 26, 2018

Our dear father Keith Averett, age 90, passed away peacefully May 26, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. Dad was born to Charles W. and Nellene Turner Averett March 19, 1928, at the Historical Relief Society Hall in Washington, Utah. He was their youngest child and followed his sister Norma A Scow and Alpine C Averett.

Dad was raised and attended schools mostly in Washington and St. George but lived in Cedar City during the summers where his father worked on the roads up Cedar Canyon and Orderville. They spent a couple of long cold winters in Central Idaho building roads around Swan Valley, the Galena Summit and Stanley Basin.

They were a close-knit family and had many adventures along the way, as well as making lifelong friends.

Although he was too young at the time, he found a way to join the Navy and served toward the end of WWII in the Hawaiian islands as a supply sergeant, cook, handyman and barber. He finished high school there and has a diploma from Honolulu High and one from Dixie High.

Upon his return from the service he met and married Elaine Hirschi on Oct. 4, 1945, in the St George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were married 64 yrs. Our sweet mother passed away in November of 2012 which left a huge void in his life.

Dad and Mom have six children: Penny Kaye (Roger Stratton) Orem, Utah; Alan Keith (Kathy Cox) St George, Utah; Annette (John Murray) Cedar City, Utah; Charmaine (deceased) (Rick Excel) (Wendy), Washington, Utah; Kevin Charles, Washington, Utah; Ashley Hirschi (Michelle Stucki) LaVerkin, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Dad and mom moved to Cedar City in 1949 to work at Bradshaw Auto Parts and Southwest Distributing. He also worked at the VFW Club, Cox Motors and with the Iron County Sheriff’s Office. He was a member of the JCs, Hey Cedar Square Dance Club and served in the Lions Club for 53 years.

In 1953, Dad and his partner Bud Chamberlain started Cedar Glass. Over the years they added Dixie Glass, Kanab Glass and Page Glass and had smaller stores in Beaver, Richfield, Panquitch and Panaca, Nevada.

Dad traveled the roads as the major salesman for the company and worked the area from southeastern Nevada to Page, Arizona.  They supplied almost all of the materials for the Glen Canyon Dam in Page. He also supplied materials for churches, schools, homes and businesses throughout the Tri-State area. Dad’s stores would sell anything from pianos to vacuums, paint, hardware, appliances, carpet, electronics and more.

Dad’s first love was the auto parts business, and he opened ABC Auto Parts in Cedar City, Hurricane, St George and Beaver, and his sons managed them. Dad also had a love for cars. He entered his 1931 Model A Ford and his 1958 Edsel  in the Hurricane Easter Car Show every year and brought home several trophies.

In the spring of 1973, Dad purchased a building in Springdale, Utah, and had it remodeled into a grocery and curio store named the Big Chief Trading Post. Along with the Canyon Ranch Motel, Mom and Charmaine managed the store, and the boys worked there in the summers. Dad’s cousin Jimmy Reber came up from Las Vegas to paint the side of the building with a big chief, it was a beautiful work of art, enjoyed by millions of tourists traveling to Zion National Park.

Other businesses he owned were the Frostop in Cedar City, Heritage Valley Laundromat in Hurricane and Mr Auto Glass in St George. He employed hundreds of people over the 40 plus years he was in business.

Dad and Mom were able to see many things around the world. They enjoyed traveling across the U.S. into Canada and to islands and countries abroad. Our family enjoyed the beauty of Navajo Lake, Lake Mead and Lake Powell and the mountains of Iron, Kane and Washington counties. There were several trips to California and Wyoming. The trips with SUU’s Quarterback Club organized by Keith Workman to Southern California were grand adventures for Dad, his sons and grandsons.

Dad never met a stranger; he would engage everyone he met in conversation making fast friends. He enjoyed finding out if they might be related or what they had in common.

He truly loved all of his children and would do anything to help them succeed. He was our rock; we are grateful we were able to serve him the last few years. We will miss him more than words can express.

Dad is preceded in death by his loving wife, Elaine; his parents; brother Alpine; sister Norma; daughter Charmaine; and grandson Travis Excell.

The family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff at Red Cliffs Health and Rehab, Dixie Home Health and Hospice along with Kristal Dutson, Lilly Jessop and Lori Bistline for the compassionate care they provided for Dad, which made it possible for him to remain at home until his passing.
