Richens Elijah Brigham

Brigham, Richens Obit2(June 8, 1922 – June 9, 2014)

Richens Elijah Brigham was born in Corvallis, Oregon on June 8, 1922 to Marie McNeal Brigham and Leslie Elijah Brigham. The second of four children, Richens outlived all of his siblings: Martha Brigham Beamer, James Leslie Brigham, and Larue Brigham Stier. He spent his youth in Portland, Oregon before his family moved to Washington D.C. in 1939, when his father took a job with the Secretary of War. He graduated from Washington-Lee High School in 1940 and enrolled at Cornell University in the School of Engineering. World War II interrupted Richens’ college career and he served in France and Germany, most notably in the Battle of the Bulge. After returning from the war, he returned to his family in Washington D.C. and began attending classes at George Washington University.

It was there that he met Elizabeth Dean. He swept her off her feet and they married in August of 1948, after they had both completed their undergraduate degrees, his from Cornell University in Civil Engineering, and hers from George Washington University in Psychology. Together they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where their first child, David Richens was born. In 1950 they returned to Washington D.C. where Richens and Betty welcomed seven more children over the next seventeen years.

Richens had a varied and successful career, working early on as a carpenter on numerous projects including the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. After passing his certification exam and becoming a Professional Civil Engineer, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for several years and then joined N.A.S.A., working on the space program. He later worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency, and completed his career working for the Architect of the Capitol in the Executive branch of the Federal Government. He managed projects including the design and construction of an addition to the Library of Congress and the completion of the Sam Rayburn Senate Office building.

While Richens was building his career and raising his children, he designed and built the family home in Arlington, Virginia, doing all of the work himself in the evenings and weekends over the course of twelve years. In 1964, the family moved into the six-bedroom house he had made with his own hands.

Brigham, Richens YRichens and Elizabeth were always active in the church and raised all of the children in the church. Raising that many children was never easy, but they succeeded in passing on important values to their children which included the importance of maintaining a sense of personal integrity, valuing education, treating others with compassion, and the virtue of honest work.

After his wife and family, Richens loved automobiles. In his garage in St. George is his pride and joy; the Dodge that his parents purchased 1924. Over the years, he bought numerous used cars and, in his meticulous way, returned them to working order, first for his immediate family, and later for his children as they grew up and left home.

In the summer of 1990, Richens initiated a hiking trip from the north to the south rim of the Grand Canyon for himself and Betty, six of their children and one grandchild. He and Betty flew into St. George, Utah where they rented a car to drive to the north rim. It was on that trip that they discovered the beauty and charm of St. George and made the spontaneous decision to move to St. George for their retirement. Upon returning to Arlington, Virginia, they courageously announced their decision to their dubious children, put their home on the market and sorted through forty years of accumulated belongings. In the summer of 1992, they drove across the country and rented a condominium in St. George. They had left a lifetime of friends and family to return to their beloved southwest where they knew not a soul. Over the next few years, they found a beautiful home on the banks of the Virgin River and made many beloved friends.

In time, they chose to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. These eighteen years in St. George were the happiest times in Richens and Betty’s marriage as they created a new life together and renewed their commitment to each other in retirement.

Richens passed on to make a new home for Betty and himself on Monday, June 9, 2014. He was preceded in death by two of his daughters, Merry Alice Brigham and Lisa Christine McCarthy.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty, his children, David Richens Brigham (Laura), Carol Lynn Brigham, James Elijah Brigham (Michelle), Leslie Marie Finn (Edward), Stephen Dean Brigham, and Richard Matthew Brigham (Kirsten), as well as fourteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

On Sunday, June 8, 2014, Richens celebrated his 92nd birthday with his beloved wife and daughter. This was a milestone he and his family and prayed he would reach, and it was a peaceful and loving occasion.

Elsie evolved into knowing the one important and simple truth in life, “ya gotta love!” She gave love and acceptance to others without hesitation. Judgment and criticism were neither in her vocabulary nor in her mind. She saw through the façade when we were trying to cover our pain and she allowed us to be truthful with ourselves. Elsie’s life began in simple environs surrounded by loving parents, home cooking, chores and the Depression. She married and had five children. Simplicity ended when the family was hit hard with years of struggle, which led to endless complications. Elsie finally discovered a safe haven in her faith in Jesus, her faith in love. This faith gave her the stepping stones to reconstruct her life of simplicity. She rose out of the ashes of fear into recognizing that each of us struggle as we venture through life. She then knew that everyone needs forgiveness and everyone needs love, so that’s what she did. We don’t have to miss Elsie, she left her finger prints (and for some who were more hard-headed perhaps her foot print) on our very souls.  She is with each of us who were so fortunate to have spent a part of our lives with her. Thank you Elsie.

She is survived by her son, Lee Bransford of Central, UT; daughters, Carol Bransford of Moreno Valley, CA, Annette Bransford of Central, UT, and Jerry Bransford of Honolulu, HI; 16 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Thornburg and a son, Billy Bransford.

Patty Wanlass(December 04, 1954 – June 21, 2014)

Patty C. Wanlass, 59, lost her courageous battle with Leiomyosarcoma cancer and passed away surrounded by her family on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, June 21, 2014.  Born in American Fork, Utah on December 04, 1954 to Robert and Patricia Christiansen.  She married Carl T. Wanlass on November 12, 1976 in American Fork, Utah.

Patty grew up as a free spirit who loved being outdoors riding her beloved horse Patches, spending time up the canyon, and taking car rides over the “Highland Bump”.  After marrying her soul mate, she never expected to have children, however, she was quickly blessed with two boys that gave her a run for her money each and every day of her life.  As the only girl of the family, Patty endured a boy’s life of sports, stitches, and troublemaking.  There was no baseball game she didn’t attend, action movie she didn’t see, or G.I. Joe figure she didn’t buy. As her boys grew up and moved on, she fostered an adventurous spirit and always loved trying new things. She developed many passions including golfing, hiking in the desert, landscape photography, and water coloring.  She had a natural talent with both the lens and brush that will live on forever through her work. Four years ago, she was given her greatest wish of all, the first girl of the family.  She finally had a kindred spirit to share years of pent-up girl talk! There was nothing more cherished in her life than her two grandchildren.

She is survived by her loving husband Carl T. Wanlass of Washington, UT; son Tyson (Ashley) of Salt Lake City, UT; son Trent (Lindsey) of Washington, UT; grandchildren Madyson Lynn Wanlass and Seth Ryan Holstein; parents Robert (Patricia) of Highland, UT; sister Gay (Michael) of Pleasant Grove, UT; brother Bret of Salt Lake City, UT; brother Dan (Stephanie) of La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines.

Per Patty’s request there will be no public viewing, no funeral services, and no giving of flowers please. True to her nature she’s decided to donate her body to the University of Utah in the interest of cancer research. A public celebration of her life will be held Friday, June 27 from 5-10 p.m. at the Northampton House, 198 West 300 North, American Fork, Utah.  We invite anyone who is able to attend to come as you are and raise a glass in honor of one of the most positively radiant, generous, and Sunny Lady to grace this earth. In lieu of flowers the family requests a donation made to the Huntsman Cancer Institute in Patty’s name.  We are eternally grateful for the care and support given by the doctors and nurses at this amazing institute.  Patty also asked to send her love to Sally and Ruth of IHC Hospice for their tender loving care.

Love always Mom. We’ll never forget to keep smiling!

Arrangements by Heideman Hughes Mortuary, 435-674-5000.

Ralston, Robert obit(January 10, 1922 – June 24, 2014)

Robert (Bob) Edward Ralston passed away on June 24, 2014, at his home in Springdale, Utah. He was born on Jan 10, 1922, in Schaghticoke, a small town in upstate New York. Early in life he showed an interest and a knack for fixing all things mechanical.  He loved and could fix cars, motorcycles and, after high school, he started to learn how to fix and pilot airplanes. He was the valedictorian of his high school class and entered college at Rensselar Polytechnic Institute, but a lack of money and WWII changed his plans.  When he joined the military he was placed where his skills would do the most good, fixing airplanes and training others in the fine art of “making do” -fixing things even when you do not have all of the right parts or equipment.

After the war Bob developed additional skills he could use anywhere; becoming a barber and learning to tend bars. He put these skills to work earning enough money to finish college.  After graduation, Bob started his career as a USDA meat inspector but still gave hair cuts to his nephews.

The most transformative event in his life, after WWII and the great depression, was meeting and in 1960 marrying Violet Bean, a native daughter of Springdale.  They lived next door to his mother for many years in Garden Grove California, before he retired from the USDA and moved with his mother and Violet to Springdale. But he kept working even after retirement – fixing almost anything from refrigeration systems to washing machines.  He also kept his “make do” skills, designing and building a water powered hydraulic lift so his elderly mother could get in and out of the tub, and modifying the house with hand rails on the walls and tracks in the ceiling with slings so his wife could get around by herself as much as possible after she lost a leg.

Bob started a new career when he was twice elected as mayor of Springdale in 1981 and again in 1989.

He is survived by his a sister-in-law, Ruth Ralston, and six nieces and nephews: David, Edward, Andrew and Thomas Ralston, Margaret Ralston Shadowen, and Deborah Ralston Ziemer.

Plumb, Nathan(November 10, 1928 – June 25, 2014)

Nathan Riley Plumb, 85, endured to the end of his life journey and left his mortal existence on June 25, 2014, departing his loved ones and leaving his home in St. George, UT.  He was born November 10, 1928, at home in St. David, AZ, to Charles Merlin and Ada Barney Plumb, the fifth of eight children.

Nathan married Betty June Bradburn, August 2, 1948, in Tucson AZ.   Only weeks after their marriage, he left to serve in the Northern States Mission.  Upon his return their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.  They shared 55 years and raised 5 children. He lovingly cared for her during her 6 year battle with cancer, until her death in 2003.

Though he attended the University Of Arizona he left after a year and a half and gained the rest of his education though on the job training. Nathan worked as a salesman most of his life.  He sold wholesale groceries and chemicals.

Nathan loved music and sang with various choirs, chorals, and quartets.  He played several musical instruments and even played in a traveling musical orchestra on his first mission as a young man.

He loved serving his Savior Jesus Christ and served six LDS stake missions and three full time missions. He was always eager to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone he met.  He had a great desire to serve in Russia long before the country was open to missionaries.  He exhibited his faith by learning Russian.  Though he wasn’t called on a mission to Russian he traveled there with the Santa Clara Choral and shared his testimony with the wonderful people he met there.

Nathan loved sports as a participant, spectator and referee, but his greatest joy was seeing his children and grandchildren play.

He married Ruth Ann Bingham Hoff March 26, 2005.  He provided a great example and influence as husband to Ruth, and honorary father and grandfather to her 4 children and 15 grandchildren.

He enjoyed taking trips. He often traveled for work, to visit family and friends, take vacations, or just the sheer joy of “going on a road trip”. He would include anyone who was willing to hop in the car.
