June 5, 1939 – Oct. 27, 2018

Nila Jean Dodson passed away peacefully, Oct. 27, 2018, at home, surrounded by family. In her final days, her family filled the home with music, joy and a celebration of her life.

Born June 5, 1939, to Jesse Randall and Afton Richards Hailstone, Nila was the middle daughter between her sisters, Valois and Pat. She loved music, played the violin and was a member of the drill team. She met Ron Dodson in middle school and the two sweethearts were sealed together in the Los Angeles Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Aug. 7, 1958.

A tender soul with a gentle heart, Nila found the good in everyone she met and every experience. Ever the optimist, she made things better and was often heard to say, “It will all work out.” Her legacy is one of devotion, faith, kindness and childlike joy. Her loving influence graced our lives and made us all better for it.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ron; their children, Don, Randy, Karen and Chris; as well as her 16 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren whom she loved more than Disneyland!

Nila’s life was filled with miracles and wonders. She and Ron spent their retirement years together serving four missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They were blessed to enjoy many adventures around the world and wherever they were, she unconditionally loved the people and found meaning in their cultures.

She was creative, talented and made everything beautiful – from her home to the beautiful things she knitted for those she loved. A lifelong learner, Nila was never satisfied with simple explanations. She wanted to know the whys and hows of most any topic. Nila loved the beauty of nature and instilled that love in the hearts of her children. She preferred being outdoors, especially RZR riding with Ron and dear friends. She was a loyal fan of Brigham Young University athletics, attending games near and far.

Most of all she loved spending time with her family. She was known as “the cool grandma.” It was common to find her on the floor playing games, reading stories or building forts.

The family wishes to express deep gratitude to the Huntsman Cancer team for their expert and sensitive care, and to the many cherished friends who
loved Nila through the years. She loved all of you!

Janice Rae Nielsen Hagan

June 10, 1938 – Oct. 26, 2018

The Lord has extended an honorable release to Janice Rae Hagan, having completed her earthly mission in his service. He has parted the veil for Janice and called her home on Oct. 26, 2018.

She was being treated for Alzheimer’s disease and was being cared for by the staff at the Brookdale Southgate Senior Living Care Center and ISC Hospice Services. Much gratitude is expressed to those who cared for and attended to Janice’s needs. Thank you to Maria, Joddy, Heidi and the CNA staff members for their concern and kindness to a very special lady.

Janice was born in St. George, Utah, on June 10, 1938, to John Nielsen and Zina Pulsipher. Janice was raised in Gunlock and St. George, Utah, surrounded by loving parents and siblings.

She attended Woodward School as well as Dixie High School and graduated in 1956. Almost immediately after graduation, she moved to Salt Lake City and utilized her artistic talents and excelled as a “window-trimmer” for a number of retail stores in Salt Lake City.

In early 1959, Janice had saved enough of her earnings to spend a weekend in New York City. During her return flight to Salt Lake City, she struck up a lasting friendship with one of the two stewardesses (flight attendant) who encouraged Janice to explore an in-flight career with the airlines – Janice followed that suggestion and enjoyed an airline career that lasted 35 years, beginning with the original Frontier Airlines, later to Western Airlines and finally, Delta Air Lines.

During this time of her life, Janice was an avid skier using the slopes of Utah, Idaho, northern Nevada and Colorado. She was blessed with amazing agility in all manner of sports activity including basketball, tennis, running, hiking and was an amazing baseball player; she could hit, field and easily compete with her male counterparts. She was a good fastball hitter (even in her 40s) and had a great arm. The very first Christmas present her future husband presented to her was a Rawlings baseball infielder’s mitt and baseball.

Janice was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed many leadership assignments; her most favorite was serving as a Stake and Ward Primary President in the Pioneer Stake in Salt Lake City. She was also called to a service mission in Denver, Colorado, while she was based there as a stewardess in the early 1960s. She also served a two-year mission as a Hostess/Guide on Temple Square. She enjoyed serving as a Family History consultant both in Georgia and Utah, most notably in the St. George Family History Center for a period of five years, both as a consultant and as an instructor to those serving as missionaries in that mission. She was a dedicated name-extractor/arbitrator (for over 20 years) until her health deteriorated.

Janice traveled throughout the world for many years. It was during one of these adventures she saw the plight of the abandoned children in India, particularly the little girls. Her heart was broken witnessing this situation firsthand. Despite being a single woman, she initiated the process of adoption in order for her to share the many blessings she had received throughout her life – and to bring the Gospel into the life of this very young child. It was during this time she met her eternal companion, Joe. He had convinced her that her newly adopted daughter – Asha Devi – should have a father.

So, after a beautiful courtship, Joe was also “adopted.” He, Janice and Asha Devi were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake City Temple on Jan. 24, 1987. Joe was a convert to the LDS church. Janice was a wonderful missionary, not only for Asha and Joe but for many others as well. Indeed, she has returned to the presence of her heavenly Father with honor.

Janice is survived by her loving husband, Joe; sisters Jackie Johnsen and Barbara Lyman of Salt Lake City; brother Clinton (Anna) Nielsen of Kanab, Utah, and numerous nieces and nephews and their posterity.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Sharon, brother Norman and daughter Asha Devi.

Joe is hopeful that Janice will save him a soft seat when his time comes to go home; “… because, because – forever, until.”

Janice’s family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff and CNA caregivers at Brookdale for their caring attitude and love that was shown to Janice. Also the nurses and staff at Integrated Senior Care are to be recognized for their outstanding care for Janice.

We wish to express our sincere love and gratitude to our many friends and neighbors for their concerns for Janice and Joe.

June 25, 1922 – Nov. 6, 2018

Daphne June Francis, 96-year-old resident of St. George, Utah, died peacefully on Nov. 6, 2018, at The Wentworth at the Meadows, an assisted living complex in St. George.

Daphne was born in Denver, Colorado, to her loving parents Ethel Mae (Names) and Jay Frederick Pierce. She grew up in Southern California and attended Excelsior High School in Norwalk while living in Bellflower, California.  She attended business college in Long Beach and landed her first job as a secretary to an attorney at the age of 18.

She was married to Dean W. Francis in the Mesa, Arizona, Temple on Dec. 17, 1941. They moved to Laguna Beach where Dean was called into the Army. Upon his discharge two years later at the end of WWII they settled in Tustin, California, where they started Francis Brothers screen door business. Daphne was the accountant and secretary for 27 years. Dean and Daphne worked side by side all of their lives.

They raised all of their children in Tustin; she supported her sons by going to all of their sporting and scouting events all through high school.

She loved animals and had many cats and dogs all her life until her passing.

From Tustin they moved to Rockville where they built their own and many other homes and had a roadside business where they sold Indian jewelry and apple cider they made by hand.

They then moved to the Mesas and worked on genealogy and served in the St. George Temple for 29 years. After Dean’s death in 2001, Daphne dedicated her life to her family, genealogy and working with the sealers in the temple.

In 2014, she moved into the Meadows.

While there she was very active in the church branch and helped many of the other residents to enjoy their final days. Daphne was genuinely loved by all and loved serving and ministering throughout her whole life. We are honored to pay tribute to such a loving, kind and gentle soul.

Daphne is survived by her daughter Debra Perkins and two sons Darold Francis of Orem and Duane Francis of St. George, Utah. Daphne and Dean are the parents of four children, 26 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She is together with her husband Dean and her son David Francis, who passed away in 2012

Our beloved son, brother, and uncle Troy Dean Osmond was called home unexpectedly on Nov. 9, 2018, at the age of 33. He passed away peacefully of natural causes in his parents home in St. George, Utah. Troy was a friend to all. He welcomed everyone with his warm smile and big bear hugs. Everyone who knew him knew that they were loved unconditionally.
