Dorothy White

White DorothyDorothy White was born in Moorhead, Minnesota, but grew up in southeastern Idaho, an area known for growing “Idaho Spuds” and for long, cold winters. Her family attended the First Baptist Church in Idaho Falls.

She was baptized in that church at the age of 12 and began teaching Sunday school in the children’s department when she was in high school. She later graduated from Idaho Falls High School and attended Baylor University for two years.

After praying for a Christian husband (for what it seemed like a long time!), she met Mel White through mutual friends. He was born and raised in Alabama but came to Utah for his health. He was living in Salt Lake City when they met.

After marriage, they lived in Salt Lake, Las Vegas (where David was born) and Idaho before moving to St. George in 1972 to accept the pastorate of First Southern Baptist Church. The seven years they served in that capacity, until Mel’s retirement, were some of the happiest of their lives and they praised the Lord for allowing them to serve him in that way.

When Mel went home to be with the Lord, Dorothy felt it best to remain in St. George near the church and the people she loved. She taught the young adults class for many years and counted it a privilege.

For health reasons, she moved to Phoenix in 2008 to live with her son, David. She enjoyed church, meeting new people, visiting family as much as possible and hosting a Bible Study for the ladies from her church.

She believed in the power of prayer and wanted everyone to know one of my favorite prayer verses.

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever, Amen.” Ephesians 3:20.

OI568356396_BrinkerhoffFerrell(July 5, 1946 – November 27, 2015)

Ferrell E. Brinkerhoff, 69, returned into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Nov. 27, 2015, in Tropic, surrounded by his five children and loving wife after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Ferrell was born in Panguitch, Utah, on July 5, 1946, to Eldon “Dutch” and Ora LeFevre Brinkerhoff. He married Gwen Jackson August 24, 1973, in the St. George Temple.

Ferrell loved his wife, children and grandchildren; his family was the center of his universe. He looked forward to the family deer hunt every year where he was always the supplier of ample snacks and drinks. The annual family camp out on the East Fork was the highlight of his summer; he would start planning the menu, the four-wheeler ride and the schedule of events at least three months in advance. He always anticipated a large family gathering for moving cows to and from Deer Range in the spring and the fall.

Ferrell started his career in the food service industry with Rocky Mountain Inc. and was known throughout the county as the “Twinky Man.” For the last 16 years he was employed with Nicholas & Company where he received several accolades and awards for his hard work. He loved his job because of the friendships he developed with his associates and co-workers.

Ferrell had a strong testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Ferrell’s love for the Gospel grew during his service as an LDS missionary in England. His testimony continued to grow while serving his family and friends in many church positions.

He will be remembered for the love of his family, the community and the church. We love him very much and will miss him greatly, we hope they have brockle-faced cows and diet coke in heaven.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen; and children: Shane (Alexa), Jeff (Andrea), Natalie (Eugene), Cody and Kyler (Kamrie); 12 grandchildren; siblings: Louise (Jim), Raymond (Ronelda), Oretta (Doug), Danny (Wendy), Rosie (Jeff) and Donna (Link).

Linda Gail Harper Cottam

Cottam, Linda obitMay 8, 1947 – December 2, 2015

On Dec. 2, 2015, my beloved wife, our adored mother, cherished sister and grandmother quietly slipped into God’s garden of peace and love.

Linda was born in the old McGregor Hospital May 8, 1947, the second of seven children born to Robert Earl “Jack” and Barbra LaFevre Harper. Linda was raised in old Sand Town of St. George where she attended West Elementary, Woodward and graduated Dixie High School where she enjoyed enthusiastically being a Jetette. She attended Dixie Jr. College and was a member of the Rebelettes Marching Team.

She married her sweetheart, Jim Cottam, in St. George, Utah, Sept. 9, 1967. Their life together has truly been devoted to one another. They were just short of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Family meant everything to Linda as she multitasked a 30-year career at St. George Clinic in insurance and medical records where every patient got a “Hello” and “How are you?” Many true friendships were made over the years, and a “Secret Santa” was created by her and Jim.

Linda’s greatest achievements in life was being a grandmother, mother, wife and friend, in that order, as she enjoyed reading and playing with her grandchildren.

In spite of failing health the last few years, Linda’s life was made enjoyable with loving, doting care of her dear Jim, who would do anything for his “Birdie Sue.”

Linda was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings through the years. She looked forward to her visiting Relief Society teachers. Linda had a wonderful testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ.

Linda is survived by her loving husband of 48 years, Jim; her children, Debbie Williams (Troy) of Houston, Texas, and Clint (Danielle) Cottam of St. George; grandchildren, Haylee, Brodey, Tucker, London, Layla, Vincent, Chance and Beckett; sisters, Gwyn (Joe) Moore, Chris (LaMar) Miller and Arlene Harper-Veith; and brothers, Robert (Wanda) Harper and Leonard Dale Harper.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Barbra Harper; her in-laws, Ed and Dixie Cottam; and a brother, Douglas Harper.

A favorite poem of Linda’s by Shannon L. Moseley:

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.
I’m following the path God has chosen for me.
I took his hand when I heard Him call;
I turned my back and left it all.
I could not stay another day,
to laugh, to love, to work or play.
Tasks left undone must stay that way;
I’ve now found peace at the end of day.
If my parting has left a void,
then fill it with remembered joys.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss;
Oh yes, these things, I too will miss.
Be not burdened with times of sorrow.
Look for the sunshine of tomorrow.
My Life’s been full, I savored much;
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
Perhaps my time seems all to brief;
don’t lengthen your pain with undo grief.
Lift up your hearts and peace to thee,
God wanted me now — He set me free.

The family wishes to express our love and appreciation to Dixie Dialysis for their nonstop loving care shown for the “Cheetah Pod.” Special thanks to all her doctors and their staff.

Christian, McKay Y ObitAugust 17, 1946 – December 4, 2015

On Dec. 4, 2015, McKay Donald Christian, age 69, passed away at his home due to complications from cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family as his soul winged its way into eternal life. Born Aug. 17, 1946, he was the sixth child to Lewis Earl and Mary LaRue Leavitt Christian.

He was a gifted athlete in football, basketball and baseball, where he was known for hitting home runs out of the park. In later years, he excelled at tennis and, most especially, golf.

He attended the local St. George schools of East Elementary, Woodward Junior High and Dixie High School, where he served as senior class president. He then attended Dixie Juior College, where he played baseball and football while achieving a 4.0 GPA and the school’s Outstanding Science Award.

He served a two-year LDS mission to northern Germany where he was assistant to the president. It was during his mission that he made the decision to become a doctor as he learned of the joy and importance of serving others.

He attended the University of Utah to graduate with honors and a pre-med degree in medical biology. After graduating from University of Utah School of Medicine in 1974, he attended Texas Tech University to complete his residency in Family Practice.

He then joined Medical Associates in St. George, being part of the first group of doctors in town. After suffering a stroke in 2014, he retired, having practiced medicine for 40 years.

In 1970, he married Kay Pearce of Hurricane, Utah, in the St. George LDS Temple. They are the loving parents to six children: Derek McKay of St. George, Darcie Lyn Chamberlain (Alton) of Blanding, Utah, Rachel Marie Andrew (Matthew) of Nampa, Idaho, Tamara Lee Hansen (Clinton) of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Toni Kae Brown (Peter) of St. George and Laura Anne Shrout (David) of St. George. He is grandfather to 17 grandchildren.

He is also survived by siblings, Paula Jolley of Santa Clara, Utah, Grant (Geniel) of Bountiful, Utah, Clark (Laurel) of Diamond Valley, Utah, Wayne of Santa Clara and Karen Jensen (Joe) of Bountiful, as well as Elva Christian, wife of his deceased brother Ralph; many brothers- and sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.

McKay is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one grandson.

A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many capacities, including Elder’s Quorum president, bishop, high counselor and Gospel Doctrine teacher, which was his all-time favorite calling. As an avid reader he spent his entire life enjoying books, and in 1995, he realized his dream to open the used bookstore, Doc’s Book Loft.

He loved and served the community of St. George with his whole heart, and as a sports enthusiast, he supported local teams and often attended the high school games. Being a large contributor to the Jubilee of Trees, he and his wife helped raise money for Dixie Regional Medical Center and designed many Christmas trees together. A gifted healer, he leaves behind many loyal patients and colleagues whom he loved dearly. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, doctor, mentor, teacher and example, he will be greatly missed.
