She was an exceptional seamstress, decorator, yard keeper, and baker (homemade bread was one of her specialties). Most of all, Miriam was a loving daughter, mother and grandmother, devoting her time to those she loved.

Sarah TaylorMay 4, 1979 — July 27, 2016

Sarah Diantha Reed Taylor, 37, passed away on Wednesday, July 27. She was born May 4, 1979, in Ventura, California, to William C. and Linda Gappmayer Reed. She married Dale Taylor on June 14, 2003, in St. George, Utah.

Sarah lived in Oxnard, California, until 1991 when her family moved to Bakersfield, California. She graduated from Stockdale High School and was an LDS Seminary graduate. Sarah worked at a variety of jobs: deli counter, sandwich artist, medical assistant, paint mixer and pizza maker. The only career she ever wanted, though, was that of wife and mother. Sarah loved babies and old people. She was naturally compassionate and was a blessing in the lives of her elderly grandparents for whom she cared until their deaths in 2013 and 2014.

She was an excellent cook. She enjoyed replicating her favorite restaurant meals at home, often with superior results. She taught her boys to do their best at school, taking great pride in their hard work. Although recurring health problems kept her from being as active as she would have liked, she was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew her well. Sarah was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Her family meant everything to her – the family she came from, the family she created and the family who welcomed her with open arms when she married Sean.

Her passing has left a hole in our hearts that is filled with the bright hope of our Savior’s love.

She is survived by her husband, Sean Taylor, of St. George, Utah; her sons Ashton, Alva and Ezra; her parents, William and Linda Reed of Bakersfield, California; her brother Carl Reed of Bakersfield, California; her sister Eliza Clement of Wylie, Texas; her sister Emily White of San Antonio, Texas; her sister Clare Rossetto of Bakersfield, California, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Louis and Shirleen Gappmayer of St. George, Utah, and Hershall and Edith Reed of Amarillo, Texas.

Claron Bradshaw

Claron BradshawOct. 20, 1927 — July 31, 2016

Claron Wood Bradshaw ended his journey here on this earth July 31. His journey began Oct. 20, 1927, in Cedar City, Utah, with Sherwin and Maree Wood Bradshaw. Claron was the oldest of five children and spent his days filled with joy in the small town of Cedar City.

Claron attended school and graduated from BAC, now Southern Utah University, majoring in accounting. Soon after graduation, Claron met Verlynn Wallace, and they were later married on Dec. 26, 1950. Together they had three beautiful children: Mont, Jeff and Lyn Bradshaw-Ryan.

Claron, having started work at the age of 13 in the automobile industry, decided to continue this career path, moving to St. George and buying the Ford franchise. During Claron’s 35 years of doing business in St. George, he sold cars all over the Southwest and loved a good ‘haggling’ session. Claron was such a good car dealer that he was featured as salesman of the year on the cover of Time Magazine, but more importantly, Claron used his success to help others and to enhance his community.

Claron spent many days on Kolob hunting and fishing. He loved the outdoors and the serenity it brought him. Claron shared the love of the outdoors with many around him and opened his cabin on Kolob to many. Claron had many successes in his life, but he will tell you the best decision he ever made was that of being a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He had a goal of ‘graduating from the program’ and did so with 55 years of continuous sobriety.

Claron experienced many obstacles in his life’s journey, one of which was the loss of his beloved wife, Verlynn, in February 1986. After this event, he met Claudia Van Buskirk, and on Aug. 5, 1986, they were married, which brought four more children into his world. Together Claron and Claudia had many adventures and continued to trudge the road of happy destinies. A majority of these adventures were to contribute to their communities and raise awareness of social justice, continued higher education and empower those who were finding their own voice. Claudia stayed tirelessly by his side until his last breath, dedicated to keeping him in the home to be surrounded by love.

Claron was preceded in death by his parents, Sherwin Bradshaw and Maree Wood-Bradshaw, and a wonderful stepmother, Ruby Bunderson; his sisters LuRae Garn and Mauran Webster; brother Paul Bradshaw; and sons Jeff Bradshaw and Damon Van Buskirk. Claron is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Claudia Bradshaw; daughters Lyn Bradshaw-Ryan, Taunya Van Buskirk-Bronson, Alicia DeMille and LaOr Bradshaw; sons Mont Bradshaw and Braden Van Buskirk; among this great lineage is 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren and 3 on the way; and a brother, Jerald Bradshaw.

There are numerous people who have extended love, support, compassion and fudge nickels to the Bradshaw Family, too many to name; however, our deep appreciation is extended to you. Additionally, the care from Zion’s Way Hospice for their support at this time, noting Michelle Smith, for her compassion and humor.

Ivan Larsen obitMay 22, 1933 — Aug. 3, 2016

Ivan Jarvis Larsen, beloved son, husband, father and grandfather, passed away on Aug. 3, in St. George, Utah.

Ivan was born May 22, 1933, in Redmond, Utah, to Morving and Olga Andersen Larsen. Ivan graduated from North Sevier High School where he played baseball and spent many nights and weekends hunting and fishing . . . and getting to know Redmond’s local sheriff on a personal basis.

Soon after high school, Ivan joined the Air Force, where he was trained in aircraft maintenance. He had the opportunity to work on the F4s which were the same famous Thunderbirds.

Ivan met the love of his life, Sherin Leavitt from Santa Clara, and they were married on April 29, 1961, in Santa Clara, Utah. They have been married and in love for 55 years where they have been best friends and companions.

During his early years in Redmond, Ivan was known for his blonde hair, blue eyes and his love for the outdoors. He would spend many hours fishing at Redmond Lake, Salina Creek, Johnsen’s Reservoir, Fish Lake, Koosharem Reservoir and anywhere else he could drop a line. Ivan also liked hunting and has many experiences in the mountains around his home town. He was often found up Cedar Mountain, Monroe Mountain, Gooseberry and anywhere in and around Molly’s Peak up Salina Canyon. Ivan was an exceptional hunter and often was found harvesting deer and elk . . . sometime even in season. Ivan also enjoyed skiing and driving around in his black and white ’59 Chevy Impala.

After Ivan married Sheri, they made their way up north to Salt Lake City, where Ivan worked for many years at Cudahy Bar S Foods and then Hill Air Force Base where he retired. Early in his married life, he was stationed in the Philippines, where he often sent trinkets home to his wife and three boys.

During their time in Salt Lake, Ivan raised his family in Rose Park but would often bring his boys down to Sevier County where he and his boys could walk the same trails and mountains that he walked as a child. He loved fishing with his three boys, and we were all very proud of his consistent “fourth place finish” on many of those trips. He often spent his time untangling lines, loading rifles, carrying shotguns and on at least one occasion, removing a worm-covered fish hook from his beloved wife’s lip.

He was always there for his family, whether it was in the outdoors, sports, school events, scouting or church activities. Ivan was loved by all who knew him as he befriended everyone he met.

Later in life when age prohibited him from enjoying the outdoors, he loved following his favorite sports teams, which consisted of any team his grandchildren played on and the Utah Jazz. He enjoyed taking his day trips to Mesquite with Sheri where they developed long lasting friendships with many he come to know and love who knew Ivan by one name: “Geronimo.” He loved having visits from his children and grandchildren in St. George and enjoyed sitting at the kitchen table every morning catching up on everyone’s life while putting ketchup on every breakfast item both hot and cold.  He was truly a great son, husband, father and grandfather but most importantly a dear friend.

Ivan is survived by his wife, Sheri Larsen of St. George, Utah; his children: Michael Ivan Larsen of Cedar Hills, Utah (Cathy), Steve Darren Larsen of Henderson, Nevada (Nicole), and Kelly Greg Larsen of Alpine, Utah (Sarah); 11 grandchildren: Jessica, Lindsey, Kylee, Mitchell, Austin, Kolby (Kati), Tanner (Deni), Sterling Ivan and Rachel.

Ivan is also survived by his sister Betty Dumas and sister-in-law Kathy Larsen. Ivan is preceded in death by his parents, Morving and Olga, and brothers Elwood (Stella), Don and Eva (who died at birth).

Ivan is also survived by his dog Lucky and preceded in death by his trusted canine friend Chipper.

verna sparks 1September 10, 1921 — August 4, 2016

On the beautiful day of August 5, 2016, after completing her mortal journey with highest honors, the humble, kind, loving, and sometimes feisty, Verna Bacon Sparks sang and danced her way into Heaven. Born on September 10, 1921, in Georgetown, Idaho to Frank Wilbur Bacon and Grace Smart Bacon, Verna graduated from Georgetown High School where she served as Student-body President and as a cheerleader.

During her earlier years, she learned the value of hard work by assisting her father in his grocery store. She met the love of her life, Lyman Slater Sparks, while working in the store. They were married in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple on June 10, 1940. They eventually settled in Kaysville, Utah. Verna completed additional education at Weber State College, and completed Cosmetology School. She worked for many years at the Internal Revenue Service, Hill Air Force Base, Sperry Rand, and owned her own beauty shop. After retirement, she worked at Tots to Teens in Logan, Utah, and made sure that the money she earned was used to clothe her grandchildren.

Verna was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and loved the Savior with all of her heart. Her callings in the Church included serving as the Relief Society President of the Montpelier, Idaho 3rd Ward, and the Relief Society President of the Layton, Utah 7th Ward. She loved the people she served. And she served selflessly.

Verna loved trees, birds, music and was a wonderful singer and pianist. She also loved to read, and was rarely without a book. She loved searching the scriptures. Losing her eyesight was one of the most difficult trials in her life. Now she can see, hear, sing, and move without restriction; and is free from all of her pains and sorrows.

Verna had many spiritual gifts, although she would never have admitted it. She loved people, and was always there to listen to and support those around her. She loved her family, and was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin—-you name the relationship, and Verna was great at it.verna sparks

Verna will be remembered in many ways. Her macaroni salad, potato salad, custard pudding, applesauce cookies, peach preserves, apricot nectar and soups were amazing. She always provided an ice-cold can of pop to every FedEx and UPS driver that delivered her packages. She knew the drivers’ beverage preferences and had the pop ready for them, which they appreciated.

Viola Wilkin

wilkin 1Nov. 20, 1934—Aug. 3, 2016

Our cheerful and loving mother completed her earthly journey on Aug. 3. Mom was born on Nov. 20, 1934, in Logan, Utah, to Delbert and Esther Saltern. She was the oldest of 12 children.

While growing up in Logan, she enjoyed ice skating, roller skating, dancing and also swimming in Bear Lake. While working for photographer Max Brunson, she met his nephew Rollo H. Brunson, and they were married in the Logan, Utah, temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After many years of marriage and raising four children, they later divorced.

Mom supported Dad as he pursued his degree in forestry and secured his commission in the U.S. Air Force. After graduation from Utah State University, Dad served our country as an Air Force pilot, in which Mom willingly moved to various assignments in the U.S. and Japan.

Following Air Force service, Dad then pursued a career as a forest ranger with the U.S. Forest Service, which Mom, again, willingly supported and moved many times to a multitude of assignments. Our family shared many fond memories spending summers at the ranger station near Swan Valley, Idaho, and other times in the mountains of Southern Utah. Dad’s final Forest Service assignment placed our family in Cedar City, where Mom continued to be a devoted homemaker and mother, always supporting her children in their various activities.

Mom was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in several callings, including Ward Primary President. We also have wilkinmany special recollections as she served in the Paiute Indian Branch.

She later married Scot Wilkin, who was a good companion to her for many years. They later divorced.

We will always remember Mom for her enthusiastic and positive attitude in dealing with life’s challenges. She had a fun loving sense of humor, which gave her the ability to make many laugh and smile. She always looked for the good in others and worked hard to make them feel special and important.

Mom was a wonderful homemaker who took great pride in keeping her home clean and beautiful. She always made holidays and birthdays special for each of us. She was a classy lady who took good care of herself and her children. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who gave us a foundation of faith and love. We will miss her dearly.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers, Steven and Bruce. She is survived by her children: Jackie (Bryan) Larsen – Logan, Utah; Tammy (Doug) Twitchell – Cedar City, Utah; Henry (Michele) Brunson – Cedar City, Utah; and Valerie (Cole) Orton – Cedar City, Utah. Mom was a loving grandmother to 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Our family would like to thank Spring Gardens, Bella Terra and Rocky Mountain Hospice in St. George, as well as her sweet sister Jolynn for their tender and loving care of our mother.

David J. BlackettDecember 1939 — August 7, 2016

David J. Blackett, 76, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 7. He was born in December of 1939 in Salt Lake City. He was married to Patricia Vail-Blackett.

David served for seven years in the Navy. He was an entrepreneur and an accomplished, enthusiastic, very successful businessman. David was especially proud of founding All Makes Body Parts, and he had stores in seven states. He loved to travel, work and drive. His favorite place was the family home in Springdale, but he was so restless that he had to get on the road quite often. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease.

David was so generous, loving, strong and disciplined. He loved his children very much – he always had good intentions and had what was best for everyone in his mind. He left a legacy of love for so many lives that he touched. He will be missed more than words can describe. He was a fighter to the very end, as reflected in the words of the poet Dylan Thomas:

Do not go gentle into that good night,

Old age should burn and rave at close of day;

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

David is survived by his wife, Patricia; children David (Denise), Charlotte, Darren, Brandon and Krispen; grandchildren Katherine, Sam, Gabriel, Zachary and Jeremy; brother-in-law, Jimmy; sister-in-law, Yolande; beloved nephew, Avery; and his brother Jim in Idaho.

Funeral services

  • Funeral services will be held in the future at the discretion of the family.

We would especially like to thank Dr. Carol Osborn, the best doctor on the planet; Lindy Cox; the staff from Zions Way Hospice – especially DeAnn and Kameron; as well as Katrina Big Leggins and Maria Anderson, who tenderly cared for David at home.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Spilsbury Mortuary, 435-635-2212.

Doris Mae Bradford HenionSept. 20, 1923 – Aug. 9, 2016

Doris Mae Bradford Henion passed away quietly in her sleep at the Brookdale Southgate Assisted Living Facility in St. George, Utah, on Tuesday, Aug. 9, with Penny, her beloved orange cat by her side. She was one month short of her 93rd birthday.

Born prematurely on Sept. 20, 1923, in San Pedro, California, the second of three children of Elgie James and Verda Carol Godwin Bradford, Doris started life weighing only 1.5 lbs. with little hope she would survive. But with the tender care of her mother who used a shoebox and a warm kitchen oven as an incubator, Doris grew to be a strong, healthy child.

She attended school in San Pedro, California, and later in Portland, Oregon, where, after graduation from high school she took a job at the Swan Island shipyards during World War II. She had a beautiful singing voice, and at age 18, she competed for – and won – the title of “Sweetheart of Swan Island.” Although her father nixed the idea of his daughter pursuing a career in show business, she continued throughout her lifetime to sing whenever the opportunity presented itself.

At age 19, she met a handsome soldier on a bus ride home from work, and three months later on June 26, 1943, she married U. S. Army Sergeant Dexter LeRoy Henion from Randle, Washington. He passed away on June 17, 2008, just 10 days shy of what would have been of their 65th wedding anniversary.

Doris was employed for much of her life. A year after the war ended and Dex came home from the Pacific theater to his 18-month-old daughter, Linda Carol, his young bride gave birth to a son, Laurence David Henion.

When Larry started school, our mother took a job as a bank teller, where for many years she maintained an almost legendary, perfect daily record for balancing her cash drawer – then she became interested in the new industry of home party sales. For nearly a decade, she was a top salesperson for Coppercraft and later for Beeline Clothing where she won nearly every award both companies gave to their top salespeople. She also earned an impressive income for a woman in the decade of the late-1950s and early-1960s.

Doris was also an amazing seamstress and tailor, beginning at a very young age to make her own clothes, and later sewing for her husband and children. During more than 20 years when she and Dex square danced several times a week and on numerous cruises with their friends, she designed beautiful matching outfits for herself and her dance partner. She also created square dance outfits for many other dancers, earning high praise for her workmanship, as well as filling her legendary “shoe box under the bed” with cash. In addition to sewing and square dancing, she excelled for a number of years in ceramics, creating beautiful works of art for her own home and for friends and family members.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Linda Henion (Ed) Sappington of St. George, Utah; her son, Laurence Henion of Seattle, Washington; six grandchildren: Kelly Sappington Yocum (Gary) of Clinton, Utah, Stacy Sappington Welch (Rick) of St. George, Utah, David Sappington (Jan’L) of Henderson, Colorado, Kris Sappington of Sonoma, California, Michael Sappington of Pleasant Grove, Utah, and Kaytee Sappington Postma (Josh) of Anaconda, MT; 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandsons; four nieces: Judy Rickards (Bob) McAlpine of Dallas, Oregon, Janee Rickards (Gordon) Ryan of Powell Butte, Oregon, and Jamie Bradford Gremett and Julie Bradford, both of Kelso, Washington.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dexter Henion; parents, EJ and Verda Bradford; her only sister, Mildred Jean (Mickie) Parker; and her only brother, William Keith Bradford.

The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to those wonderfully patient caregivers who watched over her for the last 1 ½ years of her life at Brookdale Southgate Assisted Living Center in St. George, Utah; her square dance friends who she considered her best friends ever; and to Dave and Janene Bills, her bishop and visiting teacher, from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Corona, California, who regularly reached out to help her after Dad passed in 2008.
