Mable HiettJune 3, 1917—Aug. 16, 2016

Mabel Steele (Small) Hiett, 99, passed away on Aug. 16 at her daughter’s home in New Harmony, Utah, surrounded by all of her children. The youngest of seven children, Mabel was born on June 3, 1917, in Red Mesa, Colorado, to the late Benjamin and Tryphena Willden Steele.

Mabel’s heritage is rich with pioneer ancestry, and she lived her life with the determination and passion of those early ancestors. Her great-great grandfather, Charles Willden, was one of the ambitious settlers of south-central Utah and built the original Fort Willden on the site of the current Old Cove Fort, which he also helped erect.

She was a lifelong devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was married to Ulysse Alby Small on June 28, 1936, and subsequently raised five daughters within that faith.

Mabel was a skilled homemaker, and after she and her husband left their ranching endeavors in the early 1960s, she established many “mini” households throughout Southern Utah to accommodate her husband’s mining profession while she finished raising her children.

Mabel held many positions in the auxiliaries of the church and was especially fond of the children in the Primary organization and the Young Women organization. She was a great lover of music and encouraged the musical talents of her daughters throughout their lives.

Her award-winning yards and gardens were celebrated places of great beauty, and she was especially skilled at raising “cosmos that smile.” She had a great love for literature and was a sensitive, prolific writer. All of her children are lucky recipients of her beautiful letters and poetry.

After the passing of her husband in January 1995, Mabel was fortunate to be courted by her high school sweetheart and was married to Clifford Hiett on May 24, 1995. They were happily married for over fifteen years until his death in June 2010.

She is the mother of five daughters: Peggy (Mike) Segle, Patsy (Kent) Brooks, Twila Small, Tresa (Mike) Wadsworth and Melanee (Martin) Dulfon. She is the grandmother of 20 grandchildren, 56 great grand-children and seven great-great grandchildren.

Sheldon JohnsonApril 27, 1926 — Aug. 17, 2016

Sheldon B Johnson passed away of acute leukemia on Aug. 17, 2016, at his home in St. George, where he loved to be. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leatrice, and is survived by his wife, LaVerna; his five sons; Kerry, Layne, Kris, Gale, Brett, and their wives. Sheldon was born to Joseph and Mabel Johnson on April 27, 1926, in the town of Tropic, Utah.

He served his country as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Afterwards, he became a successful Doctor of Optometry and active member of the community in the St. George, Utah, area.

Sheldon and Leatrice raised five good and honorable sons. After the passing of Leatrice, Sheldon met and married LaVerna Bringhurst. Together they have 45 wonderful grandchildren.

When their son, Layne, was born with Down syndrome, Sheldon and Leatrice determined to raise him as they would any other child. Their dedication defied conventions of the day and shaped Layne into an independent and capable man. Leatrice, LaVerna, Sheldon, and Layne repeatedly challenged stereotypes and redefined what is possible for people with disabilities.

Sheldon served for 42 consecutive years on the Washington County School Board. He led the creation of Millcreek High School, developed the first classroom unit for children with disabilities, and pioneered innovative school construction methods still in use today. Sheldon was also responsible for the discovery and preservation of petrified dinosaur science in St. George.

Sheldon could regularly be found working some piece of equipment on his farm. Even through his 80s and throughout his illness, he loved to work and create. Originally purchased as a way to teach his sons skills and work ethic, now the Johnson farm is a training ground for the world with the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site at Johnson Farm.

Sheldon was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His legacy includes sharing his profound knowledge of the gospel and unwavering testimony with family, friends and even strangers. He strengthened others through example.

The family would like to thank so many people. We have been lifted by family, friendship and prayers in our behalf, and are so grateful to Dr. Te, his staff, and the IHC Infusion Center staff, where goodness, kindness, and skillful care radiate love. Carol Jean Lundberg Stokes

carol stokesOct. 13, 1935 — Aug. 11, 2016

Carol Jean (Lundberg) Stokes, age 80, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Aug. 11, 2016, in her home on 600 South in St. George, Utah, due to complications of chronic nephritis and old age. Carol was born Oct. 13, 1935, in Lancaster, California, to Olga (Wilkins) and Neal Martin Lundberg.

Carol spent the early part of her life in California where her father worked in the Gold Fields to provide for his family and to raise money for his future business in St George. When Carol was around five years old she moved with her parents to Washington, Utah, to the 300 N. Main Street area where the family had property. Some of Carol’s fondest memories as a child came from the time she spent with her extended family on this property.

Carol often shared memories of being carried on her father’s shoulders to go swim at the boilers. She would recall with fondness the peppermint candies her grandfather, Orman Wilkins, would carry in his pockets for his grand kids. And how Orman would tease her until Grandma would yell at him to stop. She remembers walking to the post office in Washington with her father and begging a penny or nickel from him so she could go into Nissans to get a treat.

Grandpa Wilkins was an avid gardener and she would recall just how the tomatoes and watermelon her grandpa raised in his garden tasted. Grandpa would sell the extra produce to make a little extra money, and in doing so taught Carol the importance of giving a little extra in produce for the money he received in return. Carol had a gritty pioneer woman disposition she gained as a child born of the Great Depression. She saved everything for another use including bread wrappers, the cardboard boxes supplies came in, and the tissues she used to wipe her nose, which often were later found in pieces in the wash.

Carol told often the story of how the home in Washington City did not have indoor plumbing, of using the back house, and having to bathe in a No. 3 bathtub. She often traveled to visit her grandma and grandpa Lundberg in Roosevelt for the holidays until they themselves moved to St. George. Her father’s business picked up and she moved with her parents to a home in St George a half block from the Dixie Bottling Plant and later to a home next door to the Bottling Plant on Tabernacle Street in St George. These moves were significant to her as these homes had indoor plumbing.

Carol has some great memories of her father as he tried to build his business in St George. Her dad’s involvement with both the Lions and the Elks resulted in her becoming a Lions/Elks parade queen one year.

Carol worked as a head maid at Motel 6 and as a seamstress at American Linen. She routinely used her talents to sew clothing for her family during some lean financial years. There were a few years where Carol would be wearing both shoes and socks with holes in them so her children did not have to. She ensured her children did not lack for those things which would develop their talents such as musical instruments, sports equipment, and the support they needed.  Carol was not one for gaining personal attention. She was a quiet achiever. Never asking anyone to do something she was not willing to do herself. She was often self-effacing, looking inward to correct and change herself before casting blame on others.

Carol attended Dixie Academy on Main Street where she took Spanish and other courses. It was her associations in church, her prayers to meet a young man who was active in the church, and a Spanish class, which resulted in her meeting the love of her life. It was at the wedding reception of her best friend where she was a bridesmaid that she met Dean Stokes, one of the groomsmen, of whom she described as a being so nice and a returned missionary. Carol must have made an impression on Dean because he made a number of trips on two lane roads between San Diego and St. George, in a car which had no A/C, during the summer of 1954. Carol and Dean were married in the St. George Temple on Oct. 27, 1954. They soon moved to San Diego for a year and returned to St. George so Dean could go to work for Carol’s Dad. Their marriage resulted in six children.

Carol was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints her entire life, where she served in many callings. One of her favorites was serving a mission with Dean.

Carol is survived by her sister Susan (Larry) Hutchings of Hurricane; her children, Leland Dean (Patricia [Howden]) Stokes Jr., Lynn Neal ([Claudia] [Heath]) Stokes, Janet Stokes, Bonnie Carol (Brian) Emery, Gary Wesley (Julia [Pugmire]) Stokes, John Martin, (Kristine [Knell]) Stokes; 21 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dean Stokes; her brother, Neal Martin Lundberg JR; and her parents, Olga and Neal Lundberg.

He spent many years pursuing a college education, always as a part-time student, and eventually received a master’s degree in Criminal Justice through the California State University system.

After retiring from the CHP, he and his wife moved to Prescott, Arizona, and later moved on to St.  George, where they built a house and settled in.

Jay EdwardsJune 14, 1936 — August 18, 2016

Our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, Junius “Jay” David Edwards, 79, passed peacefully Thursday, August 18, 2016, in his home surrounded by family after a courageous fight with illness.

Jay was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on June 14, 1937, to Junius Golden and Elfrida (Fikstad) Edwards. He graduated from Pocatello, Idaho in 1955.  He then served a faithful LDS mission to Norway where he left a legacy of faith and music.  He graduated from Idaho State with a degree in Business.

After leading the life of a perpetual bachelor, Jay met the love of his life, Andrea Jacqueline Dawson, and they were married in the Washington, D. C. Temple on February 7, 1976. They were happily married for 40 years and raised three children together:  Jayson, Kimberly, and Steven. Their son, Steven, passed away in 2005.

After college Jay worked for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company, where he began in sales, traveling the western regions, claiming he did more business with agents on the ski slope than in the office.   He became Regional Vice President of Fireman’s Fund and retired in 1999.   During those years with the company, the family lived in Arizona, Colorado, California, and Utah.

Jay had a lifelong love of music and held many church musical callings throughout his life.  He was exceptionally talented at the organ and piano along with leading the ward choir. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Along with music, he also loved being outdoors.  In the summer you could find him driving the boat on the lake, towing his kids and all of their friends on the wakeboard. He was also an exceptional snow skier and taught all his children from a young age how to ski.

Jay was most especially known for his outgoing personality and incredible sense of humor.  He was the life of the party and could walk into a room and make friends with everyone he met.  He loved telling humorous stories, pulling pranks and enjoying life.

He leaves his wife, Andrea (Dawson) Edwards; his son, Jayson Edwards; his daughter Kimberly Rodela (Lance); his precious grandchildren (Addison, Talmage, Maxwell); and twin brother Jack Edwards (Leslie), nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, two infant brothers, Ralph and Lynn Edwards, and his beloved son, Steven Delos Edwards, who was waiting on the other side to welcome him when he passed.

With gratitude his family acknowledges the wonderful staff at Dixie Regional Hospital and the many doctors who rendered him such loving attention through the years.

rasmussenFeb. 3, 1949 — August 9, 2016

Kathryn W. Rasmussen passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Aug 9, 2016. She had struggled with cancer and kidney failure multiple times and finally was taken due to complications that arose because of her failing kidney.

Kathryn, Kate to friends and family, was born in San Francisco on Feb. 3, 1949, to Fred and Lourie “Lauri” Wood. She had two brothers, Mark and Hal. She attended high school in San Francisco and then moved to Utah in 1969 to attend BYU as a music major. In Utah she fell in love and married Kenneth Rasmussen in 1970 and together they had two boys, Kelly J. Rasmussen and Levi S. Rasmussen.

Those who knew Kate knew that nothing was average about her. She was an amazing and generous person who insisted that the world meet her on her terms. She was never one to conform to what some might expect, nor would she ever accept that something was out of her reach to accomplish. The lives of her sons, their families and her friends were constantly enriched, complicated, and entertained by her constant desire to not stand still. She was someone who would simply not take no for an answer.

Kate adored animals, and this love formed the basis for many of her hobbies, charitable activities, and even employment at times. You could often find Kate on the side of a road in St. George, under a pop-up tent petitioning for stronger animal rights or better care. “Aunt Kate” would also arrive at homes throughout Southern Utah to pet-sit while owners were away. She knew each and every pet by name, temperament and favorite food.rasmmussen kate

Near the end, Kate was able to spend time with family, strengthen bonds, build new memories and let folks know that she was still in charge of this “thing.” In her death, as in life, she set her own rules, and passed with a calm and grace that was remarkable.

Kate is survived and missed by the following: Kelly and Heather Rasmussen and their daughter Alexandria Rasmussen. Levi Rasmussen and his son Leon Rasmussen. Her brothers Mark and Hal Wood. Innumerable friends, acquaintances and pets.

By her wishes, she was cremated and will be permanently laid to rest in the city she always wished to return to, San Francisco.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Utah Valley Mortuary.

Roy JOnesDecember 14, 1924 — August 24, 2016

Roy Earl Jones, 91, passed away peacefully at his home, Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016, in St. George, Utah, to join his best friend and beloved wife, Colleen, who passed away a short six months ago. Roy was born Dec. 14, 1924, in East Los Angeles, California, to Roy Jones and LaVona Mallett.

Though Roy and Colleen met later in life, they created a magical 53 years together.  They enjoyed working, building, playing tennis, water skiing, snow skiing, running, traveling and making friends wherever they went.

Roy said he didn’t really like to travel that much, but Colleen had been in the Foreign Service and had traveled extensively all over the world.  She couldn’t get it out of her system, so he went along!

Although they had no children of their own, they showered nieces and nephews with love and souvenirs from their travels.

Roy served in the United States Navy for three years and even drove a missile truck.

He and Colleen had a farm in Hurricane, Utah with three acres of peach, apricot and pecan trees.  They also had kittens, puppies and baby bunnies to love and care for.

When Roy absolutely could not care for his dear Colleen, she went to Beehive Homes Assisted Living.  That did not stop Roy, he would come to see her every day to bring her an ice cream cone, a kiss and take a little nap with her.  All the staff loved to see him come carefully walking in with his cane, a twinkle in his eye and a big smile on his face.  They loved seeing such devotion with their endearing bond.

We feel blessed and honored to have known you Roy.  Thank you for showing us what a great man is.  We love and will miss your sweet spirit and big smile!  Until we meet again, . . . love your devoted family and friends.

Richard Carroll WillsAug. 10, 1943 — Aug. 25, 2016

Richard Carroll Wills of St. George, Utah, was born on Aug. 10, 1943, in Oakland, California, to Nellie Irene Moody and Ray Orlin Munkers. His adoptive father was Wesley Nelson Wills. He was the second of three children to Nellie. Although every facet of his childhood was difficult, the resilience it required created a man with highest character and near superhuman strength.

While growing up on a dairy farm in Elk Grove, California, Rick’s oldest brother, Bill, was always praised for his intellect, so Rick decided he would be the hardest working. His momentum never stopped until his heart finally had nothing left to give. He died of cardiac arrest at 2:50 a.m. on Aug. 25. Rick’s broken back was the last shred of physical evidence that he truly gave everything he could in service of his fellowman.

God has called him home to get some rest, but one of Rick’s first questions upon arrival will most likely be, “Where can I start building a home?” He’ll work on it piece by piece, in between whatever else is needed, just as he did while serving as a Mormon bishop in Carlsbad, California, where he and his wife raised their children.

Rick met his wife of 52 years, Sharon Elaine Hutcheson, in grade school, and she became his high school sweetheart and greatest love. No man ever possessed greater respect and honor for the mother of his children. They were wed in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Sacramento, California, on Nov. 18, 1963, and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Oakland, California temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Rick and Sharon knew from their start together that there were only two secrets of a happy life. First: love. They both have a tremendous knowledge of the love of God. Second: family. Their greatest newlywed desire was to have a large family, and it grew into their fullness of joy. They were never happier together than when they were surrounded by their seven children, 38 grandchildren and thousands of adopted children, for they loved all children like their own.

Rick started his adult life as a football player at Sacramento City College, but duty-bound, he joined the Marine Corps to serve in Vietnam as a crypto-typist. Later Rick worked as a California Highway Patrolman, a carpenter, foreman and general contractor, and he ended his career in facilities management. Rick normally held two or three jobs to provide for his large family.

There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix with a stick of bubble gum and some duct tape. Known affectionately to his children as “MacGyver,” Rick was a jack-of-all-trades and master of most.

Rick is survived by his wife, Sharon; their children: Erick Wills (Cami), Adam Wills (Annette), Shannon Nelson (Brett), Alice Gold (LeGrand), Sarah Bartlett (Josh), David Wills (Brooke) and Renee Sorenson (Erik); 38 grandchildren; his brother Bill Wills (Jonnie); his sister Marilyn Kirkelie; Sharon’s brother Danny Hutcheson; sister Shirley Clukey (Dale); and many nieces and nephews. We expect he will be greeted on the other side by his grandson Braxton Wills, his parents and his in-laws, John and Dorothy Hutcheson.

Funeral services

  • Services will be held Monday, Aug. 29, at 11 a.m. at the Cotton Acres LDS chapel, 2583 E. 350 North, St. George, Utah 84790.
  • A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. prior to services.

In lieu of flowers, please consider passing on Dad’s legacy. Hug your neighbor. Love on some gang members. Stop and help someone with their broken-down car. Look past people’s flaws. Listen and validate someone who is angry or sad. Give a stranger the shirt off your back. Compliment a co-worker on a job well done. Serve in your church. Mentor a child. Save a life. Always keep gum in your briefcase for your kids, and keep a camera handy to capture treasured moments. Adore your wife. Giving money is good, but more noble is giving of oneself.

Honoring his Creator by the way he lived was Rick’s greatest legacy.

“Remembering our Angel in Heaven”

The Sadness never goes away,

The silent tears still flow

You’re thought of and so sadly missed

More than you’ll ever know.

But now you’re with the Angels

Safe and sound in Heaven above,

We hold on to the memories

And treasure them with love.

God took you from this world,

It was too soon to say goodbye,

But memories are precious,

They will last a lifetime trough.

We know that God has chosen you

To be his Angel too.
